VA/WV Bridges Trip 9/6-9 2012
« on: July 24, 2012, 08:01:49 pm »
A bit of short notice, but if anyone is interested, I'm planning a WV Bridges Tour with a small group of riders.

Day 1 will leave the Charlotte NC area around 9 AM on 9/6.  Route will head north stopping at 3 covered bridges in VA and WV along the way.  Plan to spend the night in the Lewisburg WV area.  Motel to be determined.  Approximately 275 miles.

Day 2 will ride from there to Tygart Lake Lodge in Grafton WV.  Plan to stop at 4 bridges along the way.  Approximately 225 miles.

Day 3 leave the lodge and ride north to the Morgantown area, then an eastern and southern loop ending in Marlinton WV, visiting 4 bridges.  Plan to stay at Old Clark Inn.  Approximately 225 miles.

Day 4 leaves Marlinton and heads back south to Charlotte with 4 bridges on the agenda.  Approximate mileage is 335.  We MAY alter our day 3 stopping point to shorten day 4.

I believe Pope is going to set up an event on the calendar.  Please IM me or post there so I can keep track of who is interested to give you specific details.

All are welcome.  There will be some non-Kawasaki brands along for the ride, so plenty of people to make fun of.   :))

Link to the calendar: http://www.cog-online.org/clubportal/EventDetail.cfm?clubID=1328&EventID=170865&mo=9&tDate=%7Bd%20%272012%2D09%2D25%27%7D

I'm still learning how to set up events on the calendar, so I will most likely do a few updated to this event.

I would like to thank Dave for opening this up to the group hear. It should be a great and fun filled event.

So I'm confused... is it Aug 6th or Sept 6th?   Might be interested if Sept.  Sounds like a great ride!  Will hotel reservations be made?  I am a Connie rider  :great:

Sorry guys....I'm getting dyslexic in my old age.  It is September.  I've changed the title to reflect that.

Got back yesterday from a 1100 mile warm-up trip to Philly and back.  I'm in love with this bike all over again.  The ZRX front end is da bom!   :))

Here's a few details I've sent out to those that are interested so far:

Thursday maps to 265 miles.  3 planned stops along the way plus gas stops as needed.
Friday maps to 225 miles with 4 planned stops.
Saturday maps to 270 miles with 4 stops.
Sunday is 335 miles and 4 stops, but I’m going to shorten that.  The last leg will be on I-81 and I-77 coming down from Christiansburg, so the time won’t be so late.

Based on our progress each day we can drop some of the stops as needed to keep making time.  If folks prefer just enjoying the roads, we can alter as needed.  I’ll also give you locations for each day’s stops, so if anyone wants to bring their GPS and do their own thing, we’ll meet up in the evenings and swap stories.  We should be on some great roads with the routes I have planned though.

For reservations, these are the places.  Go ahead and make them now to be sure you have rooms with us.
Thursday, September 6th, TBD in Lewisburg WV or White Sulpher Springs WV
Friday, September 7th, Tygart Lake Lodge, Grafton, WV  304-265-6144
Saturday, September 8th, Warm Springs Inn, Warm Springs VA  509-662-8365

I kind of have my own version of this planned for next week. If the time and weather cooperates that is. It will be the eight bridges I have located in Virginia first. Then I will do a bunch more when up in West Virginia for the Dog Days rally next week.  :)

I'm thinking about it. My schedule lightens up considerably at the end of this month but not quite sure yet it if I can make the ride.  Is anyone bringing their woman?  My wife isn't really interested in going but if there were other females she might change her mind.

Nope, this is a "guy" trip.  With the miles we do over 4 days, most of our wives would just whine and complain.  None of them ride themselves.   :)

That's what I thought but figured I would ask to make sure, wife isn't interested in going anyway.  Hopefully I can get everything taken care of by then so I can go.

Most plans are pretty much set.  I'm focusing in on Hinton WV for the first night.  I'll provide details as soon as the decision is made.

Let me know Tom.

We've pretty much settled on Pipestem State Park for the first night's stay.  Count is currently 7 and we're at the limit of the B&B I had planned to stay at.

Nine motors makes for a rather large group.  As your Insurance Communications Officer, I hope you have planned for providing everyone with a suggested route sheet and are planning on breaking up into smaller groups to ride each day.

Yep, sure am.  I already told everyone they are welcome to go their own direction too.  I've got an overview document with GPS points listed out and also google maps for each day's rides, with the bridge stops marked.  it's going to be a big challenge though, cause we're doing about 260 miles each day.  keeping everyone moving could slow us down a lot.  however, there's nothing that says we have to follow the route, nor make all the stops.  We'll just stay flexible and see how it goes.  number one priority is to enjoy the roads and have FUN!  :)
