Who is riding from anywhere in Florida to RWTW?
« on: July 28, 2017, 12:48:34 pm »
Wondering who is riding from anywhere in Florida to RWTW, dates, departure times, one day or 2, stuff like that. I haven't ridden more than 300 miles in a day in the last 2 years and also had elbow injury the last year. I've done 240 miles since then. So I wanted to know some schedules. I read some people might stop just south of Atlanta. I have a plan to stay in down town Atlanta. Maybe we ride, get to our places in or around Atlanta, meet back up and take a scenic ride to Suches? I was thinking of leaving Sept 5th. Or maybe the 4th and hang out all day in Atlanta the 5th and ride the 6th.

Anyways just putting it out there. I'm also considering riding all the 538 miles straight through, but would have to stop a little more than you concours guys..... :??:

Where are you leaving from and what time...
My R1 only gets about 145 miles to the tank, then another 20 on reserve....but I don't push it, plus a long ride like this, I will be stopping every 100 miles and stretching for 10 min.

If I leave Wed, like I would like to, I will let you know. I was planning on leaving between 5 and 6 in the morning from Tampa.
Then again, I wouldn't want to ruin you guys's rhythm. I will be stopping more than you.

Jasper. We actually take mostly 441 up. I think Reid knows the route, I just let the GPS do it's thing. Works fine unless one doesn't protect it from the sun at Zaxbies. DAMHIKIJK.

Probably too late for Rico's plan, but here's our plan. Work schedules and lack of vacation days are forcing us to (once again) not get there later than lots of other folks.
Irere is planning to leave Jax around noon on the 6th. That should get her there while light out.
I will be sneaking out of work early and leaving around 2 PM from West side of Jax.
Not sure of her route, but I will  Probably take I10 to I75. Get off I75 at Macon, and take US-441, US-19, and GA-60 to Suches.
I'd love company. I normally ride 90-120 miles between breaks, but am flexible. Will ride to make good time, but not crazy fast.

Just took 441 from Dublin GA to Athens a couple of weeks ago (follow your GPS from there), but it's good all the way to the state line above Clayton, if you ever go that far. Easy to follow, not much traffic, and bypasses most towns since it was improved. Much preferred (to me) to dealing with Atlanta insanity.

Hi Rico,
It looks like to paths that intersect. One being I-75 to Macon, then I-16 for a bit, then US129 to US441 is 295 miles and 3 hrs 49 min (between the intersections), the other being US-441 all the way is 260 miles and 4 hrs 41 min.
If you have time, I'm sure that the US441 would be a more interesting ride.
I'm not sure how much google takes into account traffic lights and stop signs. In the time it takes to go through traffic lights of a complicated intersection, I've made 3-5 miles on the interstate. A few of those, and the difference in time grows even larger.
I do agree with Ron about avoiding Atlanta. In the times I've gone through it, I think only once have there been no traffic jams, bringing me to a full stop - no thank you  :41:

Not attending this year, but I've slabbed it 75N, then around Hot-lanta and into Suches in one day a couple of times.
I try to get through Oh-Man-No FL before daybreak, then the ride isn't that bad.  Lotsa day light, and getting there
at 6pm still gets you plenty of time to pitch a tent.

I've ridden up and back with SteveJ. and Steve and back with Chris M.  from Nationals in GA.  ALL
great to ride with... set a comfortable pace, SteveJ knows ALL the resties and munchy stops.  I just
won't recommend the dinner stop at Hooters...  that was a loooong dinner stop, eh Chris?

Ride Safe All!  Hopefully I get to ONE event eventually.

That's layin' it on a bit thick, eh Tom?

Wish life was that easy, really I do...  We're down 2 people at work, so 'ancillary' vacation time is
being denied outright.  All's good.  I'd rather get this stuff done when it's too hot to ride in Flo-ri-duh, and savor the
good better winter riding days.
