Title: Who is riding from anywhere in Florida to RWTW?
Post by: Rico on July 28, 2017, 12:48:34 pm
Wondering who is riding from anywhere in Florida to RWTW, dates, departure times, one day or 2, stuff like that. I haven't ridden more than 300 miles in a day in the last 2 years and also had elbow injury the last year. I've done 240 miles since then. So I wanted to know some schedules. I read some people might stop just south of Atlanta. I have a plan to stay in down town Atlanta. Maybe we ride, get to our places in or around Atlanta, meet back up and take a scenic ride to Suches? I was thinking of leaving Sept 5th. Or maybe the 4th and hang out all day in Atlanta the 5th and ride the 6th.

Anyways just putting it out there. I'm also considering riding all the 538 miles straight through, but would have to stop a little more than you concours guys..... :??:

Where are you leaving from and what time...
My R1 only gets about 145 miles to the tank, then another 20 on reserve....but I don't push it, plus a long ride like this, I will be stopping every 100 miles and stretching for 10 min.

If I leave Wed, like I would like to, I will let you know. I was planning on leaving between 5 and 6 in the morning from Tampa.
Then again, I wouldn't want to ruin you guys's rhythm. I will be stopping more than you.

Jasper. We actually take mostly 441 up. I think Reid knows the route, I just let the GPS do it's thing. Works fine unless one doesn't protect it from the sun at Zaxbies. DAMHIKIJK.

Probably too late for Rico's plan, but here's our plan. Work schedules and lack of vacation days are forcing us to (once again) not get there later than lots of other folks.
Irere is planning to leave Jax around noon on the 6th. That should get her there while light out.
I will be sneaking out of work early and leaving around 2 PM from West side of Jax.
Not sure of her route, but I will  Probably take I10 to I75. Get off I75 at Macon, and take US-441, US-19, and GA-60 to Suches.
I'd love company. I normally ride 90-120 miles between breaks, but am flexible. Will ride to make good time, but not crazy fast.

Just took 441 from Dublin GA to Athens a couple of weeks ago (follow your GPS from there), but it's good all the way to the state line above Clayton, if you ever go that far. Easy to follow, not much traffic, and bypasses most towns since it was improved. Much preferred (to me) to dealing with Atlanta insanity.

Hi Rico,
It looks like to paths that intersect. One being I-75 to Macon, then I-16 for a bit, then US129 to US441 is 295 miles and 3 hrs 49 min (between the intersections), the other being US-441 all the way is 260 miles and 4 hrs 41 min.
If you have time, I'm sure that the US441 would be a more interesting ride.
I'm not sure how much google takes into account traffic lights and stop signs. In the time it takes to go through traffic lights of a complicated intersection, I've made 3-5 miles on the interstate. A few of those, and the difference in time grows even larger.
I do agree with Ron about avoiding Atlanta. In the times I've gone through it, I think only once have there been no traffic jams, bringing me to a full stop - no thank you  :41:

Not attending this year, but I've slabbed it 75N, then around Hot-lanta and into Suches in one day a couple of times.
I try to get through Oh-Man-No FL before daybreak, then the ride isn't that bad.  Lotsa day light, and getting there
at 6pm still gets you plenty of time to pitch a tent.

I've ridden up and back with SteveJ. and Steve and back with Chris M.  from Nationals in GA.  ALL
great to ride with... set a comfortable pace, SteveJ knows ALL the resties and munchy stops.  I just
won't recommend the dinner stop at Hooters...  that was a loooong dinner stop, eh Chris?

Ride Safe All!  Hopefully I get to ONE event eventually.

Wish life was that easy, really I do...  We're down 2 people at work, so 'ancillary' vacation time is
being denied outright.  All's good.  I'd rather get this stuff done when it's too hot to ride in Flo-ri-duh, and savor the
good better winter riding days.

I've done it a couple times, and that's how a motorcycle ride should be. Who knows, maybe I'll fall in with SteveJ, Snake and Reid if they'll have me.

Speaking of spirited, my Louisianan performance award, going up to Cliff's, was reduced to improper parking, after I paid an additional $100. No points!

Not riding but trailering. No choice because we're camping. I cannot bring the stuff I need for tent camping on the bike. I'm old, I need my comfort. That takes space. Plus, I have enough tires left for riding up there, but not up and back. If it were a hotel with stores nearby, different story. I know, there's a Walmart up the road near Blairsville but it is what it is. Edit: Tuesday, by the way. Save us some electric camp sites.

I'm recovering from cataract surgery and my Dr. does not recommend me driving the bike at this time. So I won't be coming so neither will my apple pie.    :'(   Maybe Mr T or Marty will share. Have a GREAT TIME.   :)      Ride SAFE and watch out for each other.        :motonoises:    Alan in S. Fl    :beerchug:

So....who is still in? I will know if I'm going tomorrow afternoon. Irma really is screwing with my plans.
I could go and be out of harms way the whole trip, but leaving the wife and son behind.
We will keep looking at the forecast.
Last resort would be leaving on thursday in my Honda Element.....

Wednesday departure is in jeopardy.

Thursday departure gives another day to assess Irma and the forecast heading up is dry compared to a significant rain chance on Wednesday.

If really bad, I'm cancelling, If halfway bad, I'll cage it, if good, I'll still ride up with you, but it is looking bad..... :'(

Yup. We had a pre-rally here at my place. It was hard to see everyone head off this morning and have to stay behind. Wendy and I are headed Wed eve.

I still think you could come up by car. It wouldn't be the same without you man.....

The only thing I am worried about now is, if we head back on sunday, will we be allowed back since they might close off the interstate to let everyone head up north?

Gonna cage up with a buddy from Orlando area on Wednesday morning early to arrive before dark.  My buddy made me aware of the 80% chance for rain in Suches tomorrow night and 50% for Wednesday morning.  Thursday and on look good though.  Looking forward to some good riding before the impending doom on the return trip from Irma.

I'm getting really tempted to do the same. No one is been able to answer my question tho. If the hurricane is coming up through florida, will they close down the interstates to get back?

IF there is a general evacuation I would assume that I 75 would be all north bound. Depends on the track of Irma. You may be able to use back roads for south bound. It may be that everything is just shut down by Sunday. Or it may be that central FLA just gets a bit of a blow and a few inches of rain. It is not forecast to stall out so rain shouldn't be that bad.

I'm packing the bike tomorrow and will evaluate tomorrow evening.

Not sure Rico.  Been here damn near 40 years but never tried to come back after a hurricane.  Not even sure the office of emergency management would be able to say....doubt they would make 95 AND 75 one way only...never seen that.

:-X  I heard the Governor has called a STATE OF EMERGENCY in Florida. I thinks that means we should get ready.?   Gas lines will increase, water & batteries will be in demand, the stores will be packed.  Their sales will sore and can only hope it was all for nothing but some rain and wind.     I HOPE.  :??:     Alan in S. Well guys, officially out.
Please be careful if you are heading back right after, there will probably be lots of rain.
Have fun, enjoy, and I'll see you all next year.
