Rattling front end on my 12 C14
« on: July 05, 2018, 07:20:05 pm »
Cant figure out why my 12 Connie rattles so damn much. I have ripped this damn bike down to nothing and checked plastics, steering, brakes, forks and damn thing still is clunky; it is driving me nuts. The handling is fine and I have no wobbling or stability issues at high speeds, its just this damn rattle/clunky sound over the firm bumps here in good old Michigan where the roads are like speed bumps. Anybody have this issue and find the culprit?

I had a similar issue on a different bike.  Ended up as a loose front fender.

I don't know if the rattle your having is the same as what I had or not, but worth mentioning nonetheless? My noise was more of a loud buzz, like plastic rattling against frame?  Mine was driving me nuts and took forever to figure out, turned out to be the plastic cowling directly above the headlight, more specific, the point or narrow part just above the center of the headlight. If yours is like mine was, if you tap on the cowl, just above the headlight center, you will hear an audible "CLACK".  I put a bit of adhesive backed foam on the underside of the plastic, and I have never heard the rattle or buzz again.

I can't figure it out!!! >:( I put foam underneath the nose, I have put foam in other places, checked all the bolts and pins. I lined the front fender with foam underneath to deaden that and nothing will take the rattle away. I keep thinking its the suspension but it handles great. it is clunky sounding though.  I

I have a fender extender on my bike that was not mounted quite right and when I went over large bumps the bottom of the fender extender would just catch the front push pins of the belly pan.  It took me a week to figure it out as it was not obvious to me.  Repositioned the fender extender and all good for the next 52k miles.

Got it figured out, it was an inner cage that came with my highway pegs! I bought the bike used so I had no idea that there was a mounting system inside the body work like there was and it was loose and rattling off my exhaust and front part of the motor. Now she is smooth as glass after I went through changing head bearings, wheel bearings, fork oil change and pulling faring's apart, putting foam tape everywhere. Bike does make a sound over bumps, rides like she is brand spanking new. FINALLY
