Avon Azaro AV46 150/80-16 dual compound now available.
« on: September 05, 2012, 10:25:15 am »
Well at least it is in the UK   :-\

Had an e-mail today from Avon in answer to my question about when the DC Azaro was going into production, if ever.

Hi Paul,
I have taken over from Peter McNally.
Reference the emails below, we modified the Production Spec to use Dual Compound on 9th May 2012. (Tyre week code 1912)
Thank you for your Feedback

Regards

So they've been out for nearly 4 months in the UK and no one, including me, had a clue about this. All I have to do now is find a dealer who can get one with tire code 1912 or better  :rotflmao:.

I'd suggest that you guys in the States put pressure on Avon/Cooper now that we all know a DC Azaro is available and ask your dealers if they have any Azaro's in stock with a tire code of 1912 (week 19, 2012) onwards.

If they just modifed the production spec for the existing Azaro rear, then I would think its just a matter of the old stock running out and all the new ones will be dual compound. Any Azaro rear with date code 1912 or later is the dual compound Azaro.

I have been running one for several months and think it is a DC. The wear pattern has the "flattening" in the center from slabbing, but the wear is actually a little more just outside the center. Seems a harder compound in center with softer on sides would wear this way. So far over 8500 miles and not ready to replace. I will check date code and report back.

I put one on about 3 weeks ago. I will have to check the date code.  The previous older(new) one lasted just 5000miles. Guess I have to blame SISF for that. :motonoises: :great: ;D

Hey Pat, You actually have ridden that bike enough to wear out a back tire? You made it sound like it rarely goes out.   :)

Hey Bob,

The rear isn't worn out yet but I may be riding down to GA to visit a relative next weekend
and I don't think the current one will make it down and back. The tire is about 6 years old
now and has about 10,000 miles on it. Pretty good for a Avon :motonoises:

OK... finally checked date code on mine, it is 4011, so not a DC build. I do have around 8500 miles on it so far, and it actually is getting very close to the wear bars. The strange wear shape must just be the nature of the beast. If this one is lasting over 8500 miles, I can't wait for the DC type.
Thanks for passing on the info. I believe I know what I will replace it with.

I had the single compound Azaro and loved it except that it wore out in 5,500 miles. I hope the DC is ready by the time my DC Bridgestone is done, but that's looking like two years (been a slow year for me on two wheels- another story) away.

I don't understand why this isn't being announced or even mentioned on Avon's website. Typically, construction details are readily available and often described as an advantage over the competition.

Not good marketing unless they want to deplete existing stock and keep the price the same. I am surprised that the name of the tire is going to be the same and the date code is the only way to differentiate. I would think something like Azzaro II.

That's what they did with the Storm. It became the Storm 2 Ultra when they improved the design and made it a DC tire (for the rear) although they refer to it as "Multi-Compound".

Seems like with the Storm they sold the original Storm and the Storm 2 Ultra side by side for a while. A customer could choose either one. Given this to me it would make sense to give them different names.  You guys are also saying the improved the design from Storm to Storm 2 Ultra.

With the Azaro if they have no plans to sell them side by side, and there is no real design / tread design change, I can see just phasing it into production and leaving the model name the same.

From what I can gather during discussions with Avon GB, the Azaro DC is a stop gap tire until Avon launch the Storm III. No release date for the Storm III but I'm told that the Storm III range will include a 150/80-16 tire  :great:.

Gnarly! I can't imagine a tire being better than the Storm 2 but that just means I'm spoiled.

:'( Sad to report that my AV46 that just came in from JakeWilson.com has a date code
of 3811 on the sidewall. Oh well, I'll probably wear this one out about the time the new
Storm III range will become available, Guess I'll be bypassing the Azaro DC version
unless my riding time improves.

When are we ever going to see the storm 3?  Bring up google in your browser and enter Avon Storm 3 and see how many hits you get. There is not even a hint of this thing that I can see. So it cannot be very close. I would think if it were at least close there would be some chatter out there.

Thought you all might be interested in a question I sent to Avon the other day . Not good news I'm afraid . >:(

Subject: Tire Size Avalibility
I was wondering how soon you will have a rear tire available in the 150/80ZR16 size in the Storm 2 or Storm 3 model ?
I'd really like to have a matched set for my ZG-1000 Concours .
Thanks !

Hi Paul, we currently do not have any plans for this size any time soon.  This is why we have kept the Azaro tire in this size.

The only thing that  will make them change is when sales fall off. Right now, they can't get 50% in price for 50% more life for us. Just what I would have expected.

Even so if they can get 10K average for most riders out of the Azaro DC rear, that will be a nice improvement. Now were talking same mileage as a BT45 rear or some of the other sport-touring bias ply rears. Albeit, it costs more. But then you get to have a radial tire.  -- TO ME, right now the cost and mileage make it not worth the radial. when you only have a small loss in grip with the bias plys. The sport touring bias plys work very well. Cheaper and last longer. But it seems BT45 prices lately have gone up, Azaro prices were the same last I checked. With the same mileage and closer costs, the Azaro ( DC version ) starts to look good again.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I really liked the Azaro I tried and I'd really like a DC version and would buy one. But I'm a conservative (albeit a heavy rider) and I got 5,500 miles on it. If it gave me 10,000 miles to wear out, the breakeven point of indifference on the price/mile, not counting installation cost of course, would have to be no more than about 182% pricepoint on the single compound Azaro in terms of dollars/mile.

I think you'll see all tires go up, just like oil and gas thanks to the conditions that surround the pricing of oil. I bought my BT45's last winter while it was still cold right after Christmas (lower demand) and waited until hot weather to put them on. I expected gas/oil/tires to go up in the spring and it did.

I recently bought a "cheap"set of Cooper tires for my truck that normally run about $650 and they were now $800+.  Supply & demand, etc.

I just got my new AV46 delivered from Dennis Kirk, and it has a date code of 2712. Since I don't know how to de-code the date coding, is my tire built after the 1912 code? I'm hoping that I lucked out and got a dual compound tire - it looks like the center inch and a half rubber on the tread is a slightly different color than the sides.
