Avon Storm 3D in 16 inch size
« on: March 25, 2014, 07:05:17 pm »
Check out the news release.  Saw it on webbike world. :great:

AVON TYRES INTRODUCES THE STORM 3D X-M TIRE LINE WITH 16 SIZES

(Press Release Edited by #webBikeWorld) - Avon Tires doesn't release new products very often but when they do, it's big news.

Avon Tires announced the new "Storm 3D X-M" tire for sport touring motorcycles.

They said it combines long life with the performance, ride comfort and superb handling of a sport touring tire.

The Storm 3D X-M features interlocking three-dimensional points in the sipes to improve stability, warm up time, and grip while limiting tire flex. The tire design includes both single and multi-compound super rich silica (SRS) giving this tire longer life, and excellent performance and grip in both wet and dry conditions.

“The Storm 3D X-M has been specially engineered for riders who want extended mileage, excellent grip and great wet weather capabilities in a sport touring tire,” stated Sukoshi Fahey, sales and marketing manager, Avon Tyres.

“The addition of a number of new sizes to the line offers demanding sport touring customers an excellent range of options.”

The Storm 3D X-M is now available in six popular 17- to 19-inch sizes for the front, and 10 popular 16- to 18-inch sizes for the rear.

This tire is a great choice for sport touring bikes like Yamaha FJR1300, BMW K1600 GT, Honda VT700V and Blackbird, Suzuki Hayabusa, and Kawasaki Concours 14 as well as sport bikes like Kawasaki ZX14R, YZF R1, and ZZR1400.

This is good news!!  I JUST put an Azaro on the rear, so that will give Avon some time
to get them distributed!

It looks like they're available in Canada Connie_rider!!!

You should give Dennis Kirk a call, and see if they can get these in 16"...  They usually have
good prices.

Will give Dennis a try, if not,,, are there any Canadians out there that can help a COGger?

Called Dennnis K; Talked to a Rep that honestly tried to hel me.
They are not aware of the tire in that size.
They do carry the 17 Rear in a 190 width.
Cost on that is over $260, so I suspect the 16" s going to be pricy.

They showed the Front tires as well, but I forgot to see sizes that are available.

The Avon U.K. website only indicate two 17" rear tire sizes.
http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle/storm-3d-x-m

Might take a while before we see the 16" distributed. I just purchased a Azaro rear from Dennis Kirk to slap on before heading down to JC in June.

American Moto Tire dot com has them in three 17" sizes.  Looks like the C-14 is in luck.  Front $126 and rear $175. That's $300 shipped for the C-14. Nuttin in factory C-10 sizes yet.

Received this from Avon.   :))

Ted

Hi Ted,
Thanks for your interest in the new Storm 3D X-M tire. We specifically made this tire for the Concours and FJ owners. The tire will be available sometime in April for our distributors to order and bring into the country. So should be available to dealers and consumers in May. Most of the other sizes in Storm 3D are available this month. The new tire is projected with its deeper tread and 3D technology to give better performance and mileage than its predecessor the Azaro. It also comes with the no charge Road Hazard warranty.

Cheers

I received another note from Avon this morning.
They asked that I post the info about the new tire on the COG Forum.
That was a suprise as I had never mentioned the COG Forum.

Her last note makes me think that they;
 1) Want to sell tires....
 2) Are aware of COG and may actually be teling the complete truth (that the 16" Tire was developed for the Concours and FJ).
 3) Are interested in working with us.

As far as the tire type, design, tread pattern, compound, etc.  I have serious doubts that this tire LINE was developed for the FJR and ZG, but because it's coming available in our standard size (along with all the sizes for more modern and some other "vintage" machines) to say that it was developed for us is not at all out of line.  Indeed it was... at least more so than any other modern tire currently (still) in the marketplace.

KUDOS Avon.  You're REALLY trying hard to be MY favorite tire manufacturer. THanks!

Wow, hope it is true, loved the Avon roadriders on my Vision but dang the rears wore out so fast I went to "off brands" for the next rear tires.  Interesting, the front Roadrider is still good, on my 4th rear tire, go figure.

Well, just had new dunlaps last fall, so I will have time to see if this "really" happens for our size.

The site in England doesn't know anything about the 16" size for the rear of the C10 Concours:

Storm 3D X-M (front) 120/70ZR17 (58W)
Storm 3D X-M (rear) 180/55ZR17 (73W)
Storm 3D X-M (rear) 190/50ZR17 (73W)

The North American site is completely different:

Storm 3D X-M Front

AV65 110/70ZR17 (54W)
AV65 110/80R19 59V
AV65 110/80ZR18 (58W)
AV65 120/60ZR17 (55W)
AV65 120/70ZR17 (58W)
AV65 120/70ZR18 (59W)

Storm 3D X-M Rear

AV66 150/70ZR17 (69W)
AV66 150/80ZR16 (71W)
AV66 160/60ZR17 (69W)

The "R" in the tire designation indicates Radial construction.

I saw another post about the Storm 3d-X-M tire. (Mounted on a C-14)
Decided to post it here.. Sounds good.
http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php/topic,49196.0/topicseen.html

By the way, during my discussion with Avon, they offered Tshirts for us to give out at the National (as Door Prizes).
I accepted (and asked for some Storm 3d-X-M Tires to use as Door Prizes).
I assumed that; it never hurts to ask!!!   :)

Success!!!   Avon agreed!  :))

I asked Vic Salisbury to handle the details as he is COG's Industry Liason.
With his help, the details were worked out and Avon is giving us certificates for a couple of Avon tires to use as door prizes in Johnson City!!!

Below is the last note I received from Sukoshi.
If anyone is interested they can go to these sites.

NOTE: I also received info from her on how to read numbers on the tire, and a lot of other facts that are available from Avon.
If anyone wants, PM me and I'll send it to you. Not sure I can attach it here.

Ride safe, Ted

Have fun, send pix for us to post on FB and pls have your members like us. www.facebook.com/avonmoto. They are welcome to post testimonials on www.avonmoto.com/testimonials. We send people a cap for doing that.

I just got the following back from Avon (UK) after querying why it showed on the US website but not on the UK website.

Hi George,
I can confirm that we will be producing a 150/80ZR16 in our new Storm 3D X-M range and the tyre will be available in May. Our website is in the process of being updated. Thanks
Regards
Ash Vowles

So, I guess that my next rear tyre will be a 3D X-M.  :) :great:

Hello all:

Well that figures, I just replaced my Shinko 777 150 80 16 rear with a Michelin Commander ll and just purchased an Avon Storm 2 ultra sport 120 70 18 to replace my Michelin pilot road 3 which by the way is one of the best tires I have ever had on any bike.

I went with Avon becouse the Michelins for the front were all on back order!!!

I had run Avon am 22 Super Venoms years ago on my old BSA and loved them.

Oddly enough had I known that the Michelins for the front were on back order I would have ordered  the Avon Cobra for the rear.

Looks like both tire manufactures, are starting to make some outstanding tires suited to our bikes.

Finally being able to upgrade to modern rubber and get away from the pos duncraps AWSOME!!!

Kudos to both Avon and Michelin Thank You both.

Hope to you all out on the road enjoying thr twisties :) :)
