Car Tire on C10 Rear?
« on: June 11, 2013, 11:40:06 am »
I was at an event and a guy had put a car tire on his Goldwing instead of a motorcycle tire. Seemed nuts to me, he gave me the pros and cons, and he is a 100% believer.  So, with his zealousness in mind, I have to ask - anyone in C.O.G. land try this on their own or know anyone who has.  If so, what were/are the results?

Yea, this one's even a little more heated than oil threads.  Search "dark side" and you'll find info / arguments here or just about any other moto site.

I'll leave it at that.

I met an old guy living on the road on his 59? Panhead...he was running what he called a "VW" tire on the rear...meaning the old VW bugs...buys them at Pep Boys for like $30 and gets about 50K outta the tire.  But he's alao the kinda guy that probably rides about 50K a year too (living on the road).

Well it fits and is cheap and lasts forever...but the center tread is kinda flat (it is a car tire, al be it a skinny tire)...but I guess with a Panhead he is not doing the twisties a lot and putting that many miles on the bike means he is doing a lot of highway riding..iie long and straight....

hey, if it fits and works....but I think it kinda defeats the purpose of owning a Connie...a GW by comparison is not "sport" touring but nothing more than a 2 wheeled winnebago...

It's been done. It stirs up a lot of emotions and opinions. I personally have never really considered doing this. But to also be fair, I can't recall anyone posting where someone actually had a catastrophic failure or crashed solely because they were going this route. And again, all input is not necessarily true or false. It is of course folks opinions.

Now the pop corn is ready. But lets stay civil here. Whether or not you agree or disagree with this practice, keep it civil and respect other folks right to have an opinion. You do not have to agree with said opinions, but you do have to respect other folks right to have their opinion. And personal attacks and insults (or any other forum violations) could be cause for ....... So keep it civil, OK folks. Thanks.  C:-)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. This was a fairly recent thread on such a topic on the C14 side of the tires section.

I'd never do it, in my opinion you aren't really saving that much but you are risking more by doing it. Lots and lots written on it, one of the major bike mags just did a piece on it over the winter.

Concourier article:

'Better traction in all conditions and attitudes'

You will find many who argue against, and they have no experience in the subject including the mag article.

There are at least 3 C10's and a C14 that are or have used a rear car tire.

well I googled it for fun...there's a whole damn "darkside" forum just for guys running car tires...I had no idea this was so wide spread.  I thought is was just kinda an old school chopper thing from the 60s.

was out it the shed yesterday and I just happened to have one of my spare rear tires right next to a small car tire...strangely almost the same size and the tread had a very similar curvature to it...interesting...but I've been happy with the on-line prices for MC tires....and I just don't think that car tire is going to have a smooth transition when you lean onto the side wall.

I haven't done it...yet. However, my friends in the ST group, have been using them for years and swear by em. These particular riders are BIG twistie riders and don't seem to bother them.

Also, have Gold Wing friends who do it too, and they too swear by them.

I'm thinking very strongly about installing one next time I need a rear tire. I'm not a big twistie rider, so for me, I don't see any problems.

size restrictions on the front make it near impossible to fit.

Ahhhh the double darkside!  >:D

Since car tires don't fit the front, some run a rear tire (turned to opposite rotation) on the front.  Double darkside.

I never compared but are the tread patterns reversed on front vs rear tires?  If so, why?

Not sure a car tire would work on the front, given the way a motorcycle turns / steers. I am not ready to try it, but I think a lot of the mumbo jumbo on the articles is why it probably won't work on the front.  But given a proper motorcycle tire on the front getting the bike to steer properly, it seems the rear CT can work.

On motorcycles, yes.  I think it has to do with both how the tires are used - front contributes more to braking, rear to accelerating - and how the tires need to shed water in the rain.

There is whats called a "double darksider" on the front they run a rear mc tire, and many of them reverse the direction of rotation. I get why, but it just dosent interest or intrigue me.

The modern car pasenger radial is not your grandfather car tire

Common misconception. I don't ride on the side wall but you do on a MC tire as it is designed that way of course.

guess i will step outside the box for a moment...as i plan to run a car tire on the back of the turbo c-10 as i feel i will need to do many "john force" burn outs and a CT will be alot less money going up in smoke compared to a bike tire....hate on if you like, i dont care...i never follow everyone elses path as i am NOT a sheeple...  :)  :motonoises:

My father is a dark sider in the gold wing community.  I have rode his bike and you really cant tell that much of a difference.  It is weird watching him in the curves though.  Tires aren't supposed to tilt are they :o
