12V Cig lighter mods - need advice

Pete_Klein_WI

Big Wheel
Need to add a 12V cigarette lighter adapter to power GPS on ZG1000 (Concours). Need links to modification ideas, pictures, parts, etc.

I picked up +12Vdc power from the Aux. power connectors under the left glove box and connected it to a auxiliary power connector (waterproof cigarette lighter thingy) that I mounted on the hump inside the glove box using 3M Molding tape. I did this so I can use the car adapter cord and not have to buy a power cord just for the bike. The power jack is a standard one purchased at Wal Mart or other dept store. -- Steve Smith, #3184 COG Northeast Area Director (somewhere in south central CT) If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

http://www.fredandrose.com/Concours/images/Dscn2428.jpg I mounted mine here, and used the factory accessory leads under the fairing as they are always on and not switched. This lets me for example charge the cell phone while I am in camp and not while riding.

I am cheap... I mean frugal. I got a cheap C.lighter extender cord from Rad Shack or somewhere. I cut the end off I did not need and attached the wires to the connections under the left side fairing. BUT before you connect it run the cord through the door hinge area on the left fairing pocket. Now all the cord and connector is in the that pocket. I either jam my xm in the pocket and power it using the socket or I run the power cord out to my tank bag and have all my electronics in it. I removed some of the lower seal area of the pocket door to allow the cord to come out without crimping to hard on the wire or leaking water in. I have had power connections shake loose because of cheap lighter type connection. You know I fixed that with a rubber band. ---------------------------------- I will answer any question. It is up to you to figure out if I should have.

I bought a 3 cig socket + 2 usb socket combow from Schuks for about $9. Cut the cig plug off and attached a plug to mate with the Battery tender plug. Put the whole thing in the tool box and ran the car power addater for the gps under the tank. Works pretty good, but is always on. I can unplug the box anytime though. Don't have any pics but can get some and post to webshots if you want. 1990 Aint she a pretty Tomato (the bike ofcourse) wedshots albums http://community.webshots.com/user/sawfiler64/albums/most-recent

Used the open power leads and mounted my 12v adapter to the left side glove box. That way it is covered from water when I wash the bike (or rain :p ). I do like the look that Slybones has. :) Yuma, Summer in Yuma is not hell, but hell is a local call :) 2006 Connie http://community.webshots.com/user/Lateck?vhost=community

I ran one off of Murph's auxilliary fuse block and mounted it to the fairing frame beside the left glove box. I run my XM radio off of it. You have to reach under the fairing to access it, but it's easily accessible and not visible. I mounted it with zip ties. It has a weather proof cap and I bought it at Walmart for 5 or 6 bucks.

I bought a 12 volt outlet from Meijer's with a rubber cap (for keeping water out) and a plastic, flat, mounting bracket attached to it. I wired it to the accessory lead in the fairing and attached it via hook and loop, and zip tie to the triple tree. I have a small bungie around the other side that I use to hold excess wire, and attach my MP3 player to. Here's pics:

I bought 2 from a local Marine shop. They water tight since they are used on boats. Installed one on the left side above the pocket and another one on the lower right side. The one on the left is wired so it is powered with the key is on. The one on the lower right is wired direct to the battery and the intent is to use it when I need to power an air pump to pump up a tire.

I bought mine from Wal-mart, nice quality and waterproof for $8 each. Mounted them under the seat on the rear fender. Dry and water proof area, one leads forward for the GPS and the other for the cell. Used the rear assy wires which were only 6 inches away. Works great.
