Carb Question

Hello, was out riding last night and was really moving it, anyway when I got off the interstate and rolled up to the stop light, the bike started running rough and acting like it was lugging down, especailly between idle and about 4500 rpm. Get to my destination and as I am rolling into the parking lot, it dies. Park the bike on the sidestand and run into my meeting. When I came back out, there was some gas leaking from what appears to be Carb #1. Anyway, had to ride back home and parked it on the centerstand and checked for more leaks. None showed up, but I still have a stronger than normal smell of gas in the garage. Any suggestions as to what to look at? She is a '06 with 30000 miles. My first guess would be you have some small piece of debris holding the float valve open. At low speeds you don't draw enough air to counteract the flooding condition. I had the exact same symptoms happen to my bike with the #3 carb. Drove me nuts wondering if it was a plug wire etc.. I tried a number of things first, but when I took the carbs apart, I found a small piece of plastic holding the float valve open. Fixed that, fixed the problem. Now I know why fuel filters are a recommended item... Let me know if I nailed it.

From what you say, it sounds like there's a bit of trash on the #1 carb needle valve..trash is keeping needle from seating completely

Try it the EZ way 1st. Drain the float bowl, inspect the contents, petcock to prime, tap the bowl, petcock back to on, repeat if reqd. +1 re the xtra fuel filter, mebbe change the line too. 01 Conc, Mijami Floriduh OTP 06: http://tinyurl.com/2vk9o2 route map: http://tinyurl.com/4p7pmd

Just a thought, but on my son's 86, somebody over tightened the drain screw on the #1 bowl and cracked it. We found that if the screw was snuged tight it would weep a little, but if we backed the screw out a tad it stoped leaking. Something to look at. 1990 Aint she a pretty Tomato (the bike ofcourse) wedshots albums http://community.webshots.com/user/sawfiler64/albums/most-recent

I would suggest that if you try what Paulie suggests or really any quick fix that you pull the plugs and using a flashlight you can usually tell if gas is flooding into a cylinder when you switch to prime. If you have a stuck open needle and switch to prime then you could fill up a cylinder and next thing you know you have a hydrolock and a bent rod. ---------------------------------- South Central Area Director Email scad@cog-online.org

Well, I have drained the float bowl on #1 and got a lot of gunk out. Going to drain the tank, put in a inline filter and then refill and drain all the float bowls. Hope it will clean it up. Now if the rain will stop, I can take her out and see. UPDATE: I have drained the tank and put in a inline filter from NAPA. Refilled the tank and let her idle and warm up, no more lag and no smell of gasoline. Thanks so much for the information and for all the help. Robert Elliott Cornelia, GA COG # 7598 CDA#0293
