Inner Cowl Issue?

wmathi

Tricycle
Hello everyone - I have been reading the forum for weeks now, Very informative.  I got a red 2009 Connie with a grand total of 50 miles on it in two weeks. I think if you wax your car or buy a new bike the same thing happens--rain.  I was wondering if I am experiencing the worst case of coincidence or if there is a known issue that I can not seem to find on the internet. I inspected the bike thoroughly before riding, rode 20 miles and while the wife was wiping off the rain, (I think it is her bike, I'm just the chauffeur) I seen the inner cowl piece - part number is 55028, was broken in two places. There were no witness marks of any kind, Clean breaks like the plastic snapped. The dealer (on phone) said he never heard of such a thing. he said I must of hit a bump. I do not believe so, I'm thinking a bump that can shatter your plastic would have been noticeable, don't you think! Dealer did send another inner cowl, $30 not a big deal, he picked up the tab. I am curious how it could have happened, hair line cracks maybe? But the story is not over, I received the inner cowl piece today, UPS in a Honda box. The Honda box scared me, but the correct piece was in the box. The piece was still wrapped in Kawasaki packaging. I picked it up and noticed there were two pieces, the part was broken. I emailed the dealer and he is sending me another one.  Am I this unlucky or are the saddle bags for carrying extra cowl pieces?  ;D  The first one broke about 4 inches from center tap on both sides, the second one had the tab broken off. I will keep you posted when I receive the third.
Any insight would be helpful, I believe this is just bad luck but I thought I would ask. Duct taping a new bike so I can ride it is a sore subject.  Thank You ahead of time

Well you could have made it a little easier for us and included pictures to make it easy for us!  ::)  (only messing with ya!) So I went to the fiche to look up the part number to see which part it was.
But I must say that I can't recall anyone ever having a problem with the cowl pieces cracking and braking, that didn't hit something first. But that's just me not being able to recall it. But I think I would have remembered something like that.  But you could always be the first (to notice).  Is it possible that it might have been damaged in assembly or such?

Pictures to make life easier  :)

That's not even the part I looked up on the fiche! There's more than one part with that part number! (not kidding)  :))

That might have been damaged before or during the install of the lower cowling. But again, I haven't heard of anyone having a problem like this.

Howdy,
I'm not a ballistic specialist but that almost looks like an impact strike.  I'd be thinking about who or what was in front of you at some point in that time period that may have launched a rock or some other object at you.  If it was, thank god it didn't hit the radiator!!!
Later,
Norm

Cap'n Bob - I think your right, this had to be some kind of fluke assembly issue. It does calm me down a bit, hearing that this seems to be a isolated incident and not a known issue. It did raise my eyebrows when the replacement part came pre-broken.

Wanderer - when I seen it I thought the same, something must have hit it. I looked it over very thoroughly. There are no marks anywhere, on the cowl under it or the radiator. Again this is the first 20 miles on a brand new bike, I would have notice any smack, pop, click or snap that happen.

The part that was shipped was well packaged and padded. When I pulled the inner package out of the box I felt the two pieces. I opened the paper just far enough to get a picture for the dealer. I bought the bike from a dealer ~100 miles away, so he has been good about sending me a replacement and now a replacement for a replacement. I am sure he is wondering what the h### is going on.

I do appreciate the responces, although, I may not get answers to my specific question of "what is going on", knowing this is not a common issue relieves me ----some ???

Thought I would give you an update. I received the replacement for the replacement today. I put it on and all is well. Yeaaa
:)  ;)  8)  ;)  :)

Vajim - ouch! I notice you didn't elaborate, that's okay I wouldn't either.    ;D

MCorn - Sorry if I got you nervous. I don't know what to say I think it is a mystry that may never be solved. Since my previous posts the dealer said he didn't want the two broken cowls back. So i subjected the pieces to a little test. I was thinking the pieces may be brittle or have stress cracks maybe, so I bent and twisted with no issues. The pieces are very flexible. I have no clue.

P.S. I think the red ones are the best, nice bike, oh yeah, mine is red to. ;)
