Guys,

What engine oil do you use?

Personally, I use Mobile 1 10w-40. That, or Castrol GTX. Both are high quality full synthetics.

I find that Walmart doesn't really have a good selection of 10w-40s, and I don't want to pay Autozone prices.

Oil thread!!!!!!

Opinions vary. BUT, two major considerations:

1) use motorcycle specific only OR oils that are (or meet JASO MA/MA2 specs) or you can ruin your clutch. Rotella is an example of this.

2) what does the manufacturer specify for your operating temperature range.

Read the book and the label on the bottle

What is wrong with the two you use? Both are good choices if you get the correct ones.

Many of us use the Rotella t6 but many of us use it because that is the answer we got 20 years ago when we asked here.

Oil thread!!!!!!

Opinions vary. BUT, two major considerations:
1) Which side do you sleep on? Or do you sleep on your back, or stomach?
2) Do you like chocolate or vanilla ice cream?

There, maybe I've inserted something new in the oil thread discussions to spice things up a bit. :D

My parents and teachers must've had some very trying moments raising me... :giggle:

On a more serious note, I use Shell Rotella T6, 5W-40. I spent an afternoon looking into Shell Rotella and Chevron Delo oil several motorcycles ago. One of the conclusions I came up with is diesel operators don't care about the claims on the outside of the oil bottles. They just want something that works for a long period of time. I'm not talking about the guy with his GMC diesel pickup, but the guy who drives the Kenworth semi or Caterpillar vehicles. Taking one of those down for maintenance is extremely expensive in lost time and revenue. So they stick to what has been proven. Over several motorcycles and as many motorcycle forums, Shell Rotella oil seems to be consistently recommended. And once in awhile, you can get a rebate on it like they just had. Plus, I can buy it at places like Home Depot...and get a 10% military discount. So it is not only good, but less expensive than other oils.

Shell Rotella-T. 30+ Years...
Dyno / Semi-Synthetic / Synthetic...
NEVER had an Oil Related problem.

WE always talk about which oil to use / which is best / etc, reasons for choices, why we think XXX is bad, Oil Tests, Oil Viscosities, etc, etc, etc...
And (In the 25 years that I've been in COG) NO ONE has EVER posted an oil related failure.
NOTE: I admit that there have been damaged cams and other problems,,, but those failures were material related or manufacturing issues, not oil lubrication problems.

Think about it. <evil grin>

After thinking about it,,,,, I just did a thorough investigation on this, and I made a discovery!!!
It was an "Ahhh haaaaaaa" moment!!
As in,,,,
Shazaaaaam!!!!

I discovered that on all the bikes with damaged cams and other problems,,,

(See below for the AMAZING Discovery...)

getting closer,

it's coming,,,

patience Grasshopper,,,,,

{Would someone please wake 2andBlue for this,,,,,}

Yer almost there,,,,,,

Soon,,,,,,,,,,

Yer there!

After my exhausting study,,, I discovered that NONE of the bikes that had problems were RED!
(Ya shoulda known)

Ride safe, Ted

On my last Connie, a 2005, I had serious pitting on both cams, but again, that was a quality control issue with Kawasaki's metals rather than some type of oil failure.

Interesting note, though - the pitted cams made no difference in the performance, so there...

Lions and tigers and bears, OH MY.

I think I opened a can of worms starting this thread. But you know what? It's entertaining to read all the sarcastic posts. Well worth the price of admission, I'd say.

But seriously, these posts are good, and VERY informative, so thank you, guys for your input, sarcastic or not.

There have been some possible clutch issues with the wrong oil on these bikes in the past ( non JASO certified) but I haven't read about any recently .

1-I don't sleep
2-I eat vanilla ice cream but not with cake, cake has to have it's time to be enjoyed as cake
3-When posts here are silly or sarcastic, it means you have arrived to the group and we can laugh because you are now one of us.
4-Never hesitate to ask something.
5-My sister in-law who used to be a nut, is better.
6- And finally, you got to change oil in these things!?
