NW members riding to the rally

Anyone from Oregon, Washington or Idaho wantiing to join up on the way south to the rally? I already have heard from a member here in the Tri Cities, he and his spouse are planning on riding. Lets get together.

I'd be in, but as it stands right now, I'm leaving a week early to stash the bike & fly back home for some orchestra performances, then fly back down early on Monday the 16th.

Definitely interested in a group ride back to the PNW after the rally, though.

I'm hoping to do 3 days each way. I'm in Tri Cities

Hello Northwest! I hope many of you ride down to Bernalillo, New Mexico for this year's National Rally in June! We all worked very well together to put on a super National Rally in Canyonville in June of 2023. I look forward to seeing many familiar and new faces at this year's National. I think it is a great idea to ride down and back with other riders to New Mexico this year. Many great roads to ride on your way down and back home. If you have any questions about this year's National please ask me. In the meantime ride safe. See you all in June!

I'm highly considering this as I've not ridden that far down south or in that area, so a group would be great to ride with. What day would you be targeting to leave?

Question. I'm planning to travel down Hwy 101, stopping at Palo Alto to see my daughter (and SIL). Traveling from Palo Alto to the Rally looks like a couple days of desert travel. Temps look to be around 100F. I've ridden for hours in temps up to 116F, so I know I can do it. I also know it isn't fun and to avoid it if possible.

Are you guys just planning to tough it out? Is there a route I'm missing that'll minimize that heat? I'm open to suggestions.

Chris

chris; that is a tough one. Until you get to the longitude of flagstaff you are generally at a lower elevation with that heat.. Ideal if you could approach Rally HQ from the NW (4 corners) to be cooler. When I have ridden to and from the NW I generally have taken the ABQ, Moab, Boise route with variations on either side. Only high deserts or high forests to cross that way (except the dip into Moab and the Green River). I have also done Hwy 50 across Nevada to Tahoe...but not in June!

Here's a thought. Please feel free to pick it apart and tell me what I missed. ;)

I'd head out of Palo Alto towards Sonora Pass. Once I cross over, drop down on Hwy 395 to Mono Lake and head east. In checking the monthly weather forecast for several of the spots along the way, it looks like I'm up in the high plains with decent temps. It's 27 hrs of travel which doesn't include gas, food or lodging stops.

Anything is doable...but is this a smart route to take?

Note: I haven't looked to see if there's any motels along the way. In that part of the country, they may be few and far between.

Chris

that is certainly a lot of great roads! I have done the stretch between ELY and I-15 [Lots of dry lake beds, bones and high desert. Saw a car about every hour ] and all the roads from Blanding to ABQ on the C10. That section is likely to be a little warm. The area between the natural bridge and blanding/monticello is going to be somewhat deserted due to the summer being the least used season for anyone not on the water. I don't know if any facilities at Hite are open any longer with the drought. Hanksville and other towns do have lodging and facilities. IF the temps are just too much you could go a little more north to i-70 to hit Green River for lodging then head southwest through Moab to Monticello to Cortez. From there you have multiple paths down to ABQ. The route you have is similar to some of the routes for the rally linking up with Pagosa Springs for instance. IF you wish to get to the rally faster leave from Cortez and head 1 of 3 ways to HWY 550 to Rally HQ. also a scenic but not too twisty path.

The Cortez, Durango, Pagosa Springs and northern New Mexico areas are going to be at their busiest during the summer whereas the canyonlands and other more desert areas are going to be relatively deserted from their peak. Generally folks avoid canyonlands between Memorial Day and Labor Day unless they are true die-hards in my opinion

I have not taken the route as shown from Ely to the SW...only to Eureka to Reno/Tahoe

Thanks for the details. I'm going to try sorting through this in detail tomorrow morning. I really appreciate your feedback.

FWIW, this is the approximate route I'll take. I'll see my daughter in Palo Alto in July.

If anyone else is thinking of using this, my plan is to cross over to the Lewiston area, probably stay in Kamiah, ID. There's some nice back farmland roads that drop down in the Eastern Washington area. No traffic, no LEOs. Just nice views and corners. Lewiston to Lolo in Montana would be the next leg. The road from Lewiston to Kamiah is beautiful. Again, nice turns and pavement, but the scenic beauty makes it one of my favorite rides. From Lolo, MT, I'll head south and probably pass through the Grand Tetons. Coming back, I might go through Glacier on the Going to the Sun Road. From the East entrance, you don't need a reservation. Going south into Utah, I'm hoping to avoid the mess that is Ogden through SLC.

I'm planning to return through US12 and pick up Bryce Canyon, Grand Escalante and maybe Arches.

The cool thing about rallies like this National, is the "destination" is also the ride to and from. :)

@sagebrush - thanks for your help.
