One-Piece Suit - Gussett Purpose/Needed?

I have a really nice Olympia One-Piece suit I bought from a fellow COG member some years ago. I rode to Detroit and back yesterday, and since it was 38F, I wore the suit with several layers under it to keep me warm.
The suit has a front zipper that goes from the neck to just below the right hip joint. Enough so that I can get into it without too much wrestling.
My question is regarding the purpose and need for a gusset that goes across the main zipper. It's wide enough to let me get in the suit, but hinders trying to use the bathroom since it is about half-way up my Jean's zipper (see photo).
To others that use one-piece suits:
> do all suits have such a gusset
> does it serve any real purpose.
The only thing I can think of is to catch rain that may get past the zipper. I would put on my rain gear if caught in the rain with the suit on, so this is irrelevant to me.
I'm very tempted to cut it out, or at least remove part of it.
Any thoughts or experience?
Thanks!

I rode with a gentleman last summer who had a little clear tube running down his right pant leg. He'd stop and just walk around a bit looking like he was admiring the scenery, leaving a wet trail behind him. Maybe that is in store for you?!?!? :D :D :D

Hmm...maybe the tube was a drain for the water that got past the zipper, and gathered in the gusset; maybe it was condensation from the inside of his riding gear...maybe it was :censored:

Everybody (not all that many) that had a waterproof suit (not specific "rain gear") that said it leaked in hard or persistent rain, said it leaked right were that gusset is. I've never understood why so many will stop in the rain to put on rain gear when they are already wearing gear with a membrane in it. Close some zippered vents maybe sure, put some covers over mesh gloves sure, but stop in the rain on the side of the road and wrestle with extra gear? Then an hour later stop again to take it off and cram all that wet stuff back in your case?
I don't get it.

Don't.
Maybe have a zipper installed there at most, the water proof kind.

I don't think the gusset is water resistant. I'll need to check because it looks & feels like polyester material, like used in some basketball shorts.

Yes check, as it may have a breathable water proof membrane inside the gusset. If so, It might be better to glue a zipper in rather than sew because if sewn the thread holes might then leak.

Water test completed: water impermeable.
Apparently, there are two layers of what appears to be polyester fabric, each with a fused membrane.
I formed the gusset into a pocket, poured water in, and several minutes later the fabric was moist, but water had not filtered through. Same result on inside layer.
I'll probably just make it smaller to give more space when needed.

Thanks for the feedback and ideas; it helped.

Water test completed: water impermeable...
Was this water test accomplished to see if water leaked from the outside in...or from the inside out? Don't forget the plastic tube. It could be a lifesaver in mixed company. ;)

Thanks Tom. The reviewer sure seems to have liked it!
Apparently it didn't sell well. I have no idea when it was discontinued, but it seems it was only available for a few years.
There was a time when I had difficulty getting it on, not so much these days. 👍

I wonder if they were prompted to produce it on the heel of the Aerostitich that everyone seems to like.

Never looked at a Stitch up close. Do they have a similar gusset?
