Spring Fling Northeast, RI May 2012

You guys are making me hungry, now I want a Maxwell Street Polish or a Polish Boy sandwich.  I think I'm gonna have to go to Pattis.

Save some room... There are several excellent Portuguese restaurants in Fall River too.

New routes are available at the same location as before: either from the rally page at: http://cog-online.org/clubportal/EventDisplayNew.cfm?clubID=1328&EventID=155770&mo=5&tDate=%7Bd%20%272012-05-10%27%7D

or directly from the download page at: http://www.cog-online.org/clubportal/clubdocdisplay.cfm?clubID=1328&docID=20111&priv=0

The .zip file contains the ride files as well as a Word document describing each route. There are also text driving directions that can be printed for each route; these have the same name as the route files but are Excel files (.xls). These are all new routes as of the last few days so there may be errors in them so it would be best to open the files and look over the routes as well as the actual directions before leaving for the Spring Fling. Please let me know of any errors and I will fix them immediately. If anyone wants a bit of help downloading any / all of these routes into a GPS please feel free to e-mail or call me and I will assist you with that.

I have included a couple of routes to Battleship Cover in Fall River, MA, due to the interest some have shown in this thread. The roads right in Fall River around the highway are rough but the secondary road route should be more pleasant. That whole area is a bit rough though so maybe just slow way down at stop signs without stopping... that way you are more of a moving target and harder to molest (kidding.... mostly). Lizzie Borden took an axe / And gave her mother forty whacks / And when she saw what she had done / She gave her father forty-one. Poem about Lizzie Borden and the murder of her parents in Fall River, MA- her house is now a bed and breakfast….

See everybody in a week!

Brian

Just to let everyone know, the Newport Bridge is a toll bridge and there is a charge for crossing both ways. I believe it is $4 each way, and they do accept EZ Pass so bring those along if you have them and are planning a trip that involves crossing the Newport Bridge.

Brian

I'll have to keep that in mind if I decide to ride over to the Black Pearl in Newport for a good bowl of chowder.

clamchowder07.jpg

But now that I stop to think about it the chowder at the Black Pearl the last time I was there wasn't as good as the chowder I had the night before at S&P Oyster Co. in Mystic.  I guess I can be frugal and still satisfy my craving for a good bowl of chowder.
  ;D

Black Pearl... A tourist favourite.  I'm no expert, but your pic does not look like Rhode Island Chowda.

Yes it is. Ben and I rode over to Newport last year, when out for Twisted Throttle open house. Yes the toll is $4 each way for the bikes.  :(  But yes, it also does take EZ Pass. But you have to wonder if that bowl of chowder is worth the $8 toll (not to mention the gas). There chowder can't be that much better than the other folks in Rhode Island?

I think that is 'white' chowdah made with cream. That is how the Black Pearl makes it- with cream and butter. MMMMMMMMM

By the way, as a primer for those coming to RI for the first time:

White chowder, also called New England chowder, is made with milk or cream.
Red chowder, also called Manhattan chowder, is made with tomato paste.
Black chowder, sometimes called New York chowder, has nothing added to color or thicken the broth.

Now for spelling.... it is often said that we talk funny. Not true- our belief is that all the rest of the English speaking world spells funny or are mispronouncing some letters. Take 'R' for example, it is pronounced as if it were an 'ah'. Let's review with some examples:

Car.... pronounced Caah
Park.... pronounced Paahk

These words are not pronounced with the exaggerated 'Caw' or 'Paawk' sound, but it is important not to enunciate any 'R's that are not at the start of a word. Speaking of which, most people even pronounce Rhode Island incorrectly: articulated carefully, it should sound like this- "Rho.......Diland" and said as quickly as possible for better misunderstanding.

This method works with virtually all words with an internal 'R' but there are exceptions such as internal where you really do need that 'R'.

I have always suspected that we ship all the extra 'R's that we do not need to places like Kansas where they often seem to place them on the end of words that normally do not have them like 'idear'.

And now for homework, some vocabulary words to learn that you may not have heard of:

Hot wieners (easy boys, that isn't what some of you think). Also known as 'belly busters' and 'gaggers'. A local food product.
Coffee milk. A local drink.
Del's Lemonade. Another local drink.

Brian (yep, the 'R' is pronounced in that)

Yeah the toll is a bit high but it is a nice bridge, not like those rickety things that cross the Hudson near you.  :D

There is good chowdah on the west side of the bay too- it is excellent in places like Chelos and no nasty tolls to get there.

You might be able to borrow Kirby's EZ Pass but you are probably going to have to apologize for running down KiPass first.  :D :D

Are you going to bring safety glasses to the rally?

I've always found it easy to read a New England dialect but difficult to write in it.  Of course it is still easier to do than writing in a Joisey dialect. ;D

Back in the '80s & 90s I used to like to buy postcards in Maine written in dialect to send to my old motorcycle club.  But it used to piss me off when they read them at a meeting and the reader would take it upon themselves to correct the pronunciation of what was written on the cards.  I guess that is the problem with New Yorkers.  They insist on everything being pronounced their way.

Btw, I may write chowder but I say chowdah, just like I write New Hampshire but say New Hampshiah.

Oh ya, yu betcha.  :nananana: (MN/ND)

I just looked at the forecast for next week, that was my first mistake. :(  It has changed several times already, I'm hoping it changes back to sunshine.

Either way, I'll be there  :motonoises:

Claude

Yeah, maybe. My long range forecasts don't look good either though :-(  Andrea and I are on our way to the hotel right now to scout a place(s) to hide from the rain in some kind of communal area.

Going to find a local liquor store too- that ought to make us all a little less concerned about standing in the rain, right?

Just looked at the 10 day forecast and as of right now (Sat., 10 May 6:09 PM).... there is a -0- percent chance of rain Thurs., Fri., Sat., Sun.. That may well change but for the moment it is great.

Just got back from the hotel and restaurant and all is well for the Spring Fling.

We are working on a little RI treat for Friday just before the banquet- it isn't much but it does originate here and is still mostly found only in this area. I can give you a hint: it is green and yellow and you will need a cup to participate....

Kirby is almost vibrating with excitement.

Let me know if anybody needs or wants anything rally- related.

What's a COG rally without a little rain.  Although it would be nice to break the streak.

More info on Chowda, I've alaways called the clear broth chowda Rhode Island chowda, my favorite.
Anyone going from central Ct. We're leaving around 2 0r 3 on Thurs. going through Durham, crossing river at Goodspeed Opera house, Salem then hitting Route2 pass casinos into RI. Don't want to hit I95 slab if weather is good. Can't wait going to have a great time and extended weather forecast is looking better and better.

Very funny stuff, thank you.

You must live right, Brian; the weather for TFS&S is supposed to be sunny and 70s!  :)  By the way, I like the chowdah and clamcakes at George's of Galilee.  Mmmm, Mmmm, Good!!!!

Yeah, clean livin' pays off again.... :)  The forecast I looked at is holding with a 10% chance of rain on Thurs., and -0-  % chance for the next three days. Steve tells me that it seems that it always rains (or snows) for the spring fling but with temps. right around 70 / 50's (day / night) there won't be any snow either. We may just luck out. Now if the hotel gets the pool ready maybe we can even use that.

Down to a couple of days now.... Kirby is rigid with anticipation but that is only because he knows what the surprise is going to be.

I predict the weather will be beautiful.  :)  How do I know?  Because Vicki has accepted my invitation to come to the Twisted Throttle Open House and Meet & Greet so I will be driving a cage instead of riding my motor.

Well it looks like the weather gods smiled down on us for this thing- the forecast is now calling for 0% chance of precipitation for Thurs. through Sunday and all of the following week. It is overcast here now and has been raining on and off but tomorrow will be clear.

Outstanding! (and no, I did not pronounce any of the 'R's in that either)

Brian

Alrighty then!  This looks like a good one folks.  Can't wait to get on the road tomorrow.  See you all in Rho Diland!  (See I'm practicing!) :))

Is Angel coming?    :)

I'm sure Angel would love to come along and constantly bother Brian & Andrea for treats. Instead
she will be staying at the country club (kennel) and playing with some of her four legged friends.

The sun is out now and drying all the rain, soon the itsy bitsy spider will climb up the spout again.  :D

Well I went against my normal routine and judgement and kept putting off downloading the routes to my Zumo until tonight.  Big mistake for this computer novice. First off I have to load them one file at a time for some reason. I don't know why it's not accepting more than one a time now. But hey, I can deal with it. So I download the 11 routes one at a time. Then I realize that they are all tittled from auto name. So they all say they are Winnapaug Inn  to Winnapaug Inn . So I try to figure them out from the mileage. But most of them do not match what the name said.
So rather than screw around with this. I am now downloading one a time again. But now I must go in and shut off auto name and change the name of each route before I download it. Sometimes I think I should just go back to paper. This is such a pain that I didn't need tonight!

All will be better tomorrow when I'm riding and sharing beverages afterwards. See y'all there.

Been there done that. I caught the naming issue after two were loaded. I also transfered them to a card. I think that to get them all to load at once, they have to be placed in one mapsource file.

Going out to fill the tank with gas, load the bags on the bike and wait for the morning. ;D

All packed up and ready to go.  Should be there mid afternoon.
Can't wait to see everyone!  :beerchug:
Terry - tried any of the Naragansett beers?  Their porter and bock were pretty good.  I will be beer hunting post arrival.

bike wont start hope it charges overnight or i need to get a battery and try to get the cover of its been way overtightened by the factory

Not sure what is going on Bob but all the routes I uploaded have different names. ??? Each different route appears as four different files but that is because they are all in different formats: one is in Streets & Trips (.est), one is generic map sharing format (.gpx), one is native Garmin format from Mapsource (.gdb) and one is in Excel format, these are the written directions for us humans to read, (.xls). Assuming you have a Garmin Zumo, you would use the .gdb routes and upload them with Mapsource to the Zumo. That would be the <best> way I think. You could also directly upload any / all of the .gpx files to the Zumo or a memory card used in a Zumo but bear in mind that if you  do this the Zumo will have to 'convert' the files into map routes and may make changes to the intended route.

If I am missing the problem, someone explaining it would be great and I will correct it.

I will be at the hotel tomorrow, early afternoon, with a laptop and can help anyone with the download aspect of these routes.

OK, been tinkering with MapSource and I think I understand what is going on- you are loading the routes and then transferring them to a Garmin GPS but MapSource is 'helping' you by autonaming them... and naming the with the start and ending points so each file has the same name as all the others. Yeah, MapSource has 'helped' me out that way too- the easiest way to deal with that is to load the files one at a time, turn off autoname, and type the route name exactly as it appears at the top of MapSource in the name bar. You could also open a small window showing the files that you are loading and cut and paste the name between that window where the file appears and the route section of MapSource.

I do not know why MapSource does that and I do not know how to shut if off other than manually, one file at a time.

It would be great if the files themselves could just be copied onto the Garmin GPS directly but that does not work. I do not know what the native format is for actual file sent to the GPS, or how to store those files directly.

Hitting the road mid-morning and doing a bit of sight-seeing along the way.

What is the best option for adult beverage purchase at the rally?  Maybe Marc has that covered?

Yeah, walk up to Marc, point in any direction, ask "Hey, is that Elvis" and steal whatever he is drinking.

Looks like the closest liquor store is Weinsteins, .9 miles north.

Winestein LLC
79A Tom Harvey Rd
Westerly, RI 02891

By the way, in RI the only place to purchase anything with alcohol in it is at a liquor or 'package' store. No alcoholic beverages of any kind sold in any other type of store here.

I've been looking for just the right time to tell Kirby he cannot go but when I went out to the garage I found this- Kirby is packed and wearing his traveling scarf, sitting on the bike waiting for morning. I don't think there is any stopping him now.

Yeah Brian, That's exactly what I wound up doing. It's really not much more time consuming than having to load them one at a time. I think my mistake is not going into my Zumo's routes after they they imported to double check them. So really that one step would have saved me a lot of time when I saw what it was doing. I might have been like Wayne and caught it after two or three.  :-[
So like you pointed out, I just turned off auto name and typed in my own name. Then all was good. But not all being in the same file, I still had to do them one at a time. I think the biggest pain about that is waiting for the Zumo to go back and forth between connecting to the computer and booting on it's own after disconnecting from computer download and then the Zumo importing the downloaded file. But since I was doing other stuff as well, it didn't take that long. But I still shoud not have put it off until the night before the trip. That's what I get!    :-[
So anyway, I'll be leaving this morning. I will ride back roads for most of the ride out. I might jump on the slab between Danbury, CT. and Waterbury, CT. , since I don't know the roads out there. With my luck I would hit every light known to man!  :))  But I'll still have a good amount of nice riding, and the slab isn't bad for a little bit.  Then my plan is to ride the ferry ride (from Nov 2010) again. Maybe stop at the castle when I get off the ferry.
Hopefully I'll be in town around early afternoon. Probably before check in. So if they won't let me check in early. I may ride one of the short routes (since I'll never be able to ride them all with only a couple of days. (and one having the twisted Throttle open house/meet & greet). So I'll see y'all there.  :1rij:

Sunny and in the mid- 50's at the moment. Today is supposed to be partly cloudy but absolutely NO RAIN. The next three days will be clear with highs around 70 and nightly lows around 50. It looks like great weather for the middle of May.

See everybody in a few hours!

Brian

Got into the hotel last night,  seems to be a fun place,  easy walk to go sit by the big pond and decent places to hang in the evening :)

One thing, it's not a paved parking lot so bring kickstand pucks :)

See ya all in a few hours!

Andrea and I are leaving in a few minutes too- we just have to round up Kirby (we left the door open and he snuck out again....).

Anybody needing any last minutes riding tips, remember- the COG Spring Fling is at the Winnapaug Inn, 169 Shore Road  Westerly, RI 02891. To get there, just take a series of lefts and rights and there you are.

Brian

Our journey to Spring Fling brought us across the back roads of Connecticut.  We crossed the Connecticut River using the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry. Once off the ferry we rode to the cliffs above the east shore to Gillette Castle State Park and stretched our legs walking around this medieval replica castle that was constructed in 1919.  While in the park we we were surprised to see Cap'n Bob roll in.  We joined forces and rolled on from there toward casino territory and crossed the Thames River and followed the east shoreline south. Along the way we stopped at the Submariners Museum at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton.  From there is was a 20-30 minute back roads jaunt to the coastal shoreline region of Misquamicut in Westerly, RI to meet up with COGgers already in rally mode at the Winnapaug Inn.

I'll be uploaded photos as time allows, so check back...  Here's a link to the slideshow.

Had a great ride to the rally hq with pat on thurs.  RI has some great roads I had never been on and close to my house.  Rt 116 was great.

What a day! Lead a group of 8 bikes up the coast, thru Newport mansions and beaches before having lunch at Pattys pierogies in Fall River ma then onto battleship cove for the afternoon exploring the 680 ft battleship ma, destroyer, lionfish sub, and east German ship.  Back to rally hq for the banquet.

Finally caught Cap'n Bob in his native environment.

Hi all,

I want to thank Brian and Andrea and everyone that helped for an awesome time!  The friends, rides, drinks, and seeing everyone was perfect!

I have uploaded my pictures from the weekend here:

https://plus.google.com/photos/103145028103173749314/albums/5744329700371724769?authkey=CKXeiO6w7vrKgwE

I will post up other pics I took of the stunt rider at Twisted Throttle soon...

Thanks again for a great weekend!

Tom

My wife and I drove the cage to Twisted Throttle to day and saw so many COGERS there  and they were all having a great Fling time, BDF nice job. So many bikes there, old, new and the ugly! Have fun this evening!

Here is the link for "Teach" who was the stunt rider today.  Some nice action pics:

Brian and Andrea, thank you for hosting the rally.  A great motel, delicious banquet, twisted throttle open house with the COG booth, and for showing me great roads that are almost in my back yard.
Well done!

It's just about done.  Another spectacular COG event.  Drop dead perfect weather.  Wonderful group of people.  Special thanks to Brian, Andrea and Kirby for hosting.  Thanks to Marc's dad's friend for buying the Porter and to Marc for offering them.    Looking forward to the next one.
:beerchug:

Thank You, to our gracious Hosts, Andrea and Brian! Just got in, and it was a beautiful day to ride.

Kirby, and by extension, Kipass, kept the rains at bay and the weather perfect, for the weekend.

Alex, thanks for the info on the Merritt Pkwy!

Just got in from a spectacular ride home. Many thanks to Brian and Andrea for the countless hours to pull off an incredible event. Location, food, friends, riding and B-E-A-utiful weather was awesome.

Another great rally is in the books. Thanks to Brian and Andrea for such a well planned event. The whole family had a great time and we're all home now. It's pretty hot outside today so this timed out perfect. We could not have asked for a more perfect weekend. So I nominate Brain and Andrea to organize another event. I figure that they could pay off who ever they did for this weekends weather. (Maybe give Jason the number of the weather gods for Wellsboro)  :))
All in all, good folks, food and fun. The only down side is it went too darn fast. And I have to go to work tomorrow. I'll load my photo's later on and provide a link. Thanks everyone for a really nice weekend.  :beerchug:

I would like to add my thanks to Brian and Andrea for a GREAT rally weekend.  Couldn't have asked for better weather and the location was very nice.  Good food, friends, and fun; who could ask for better? :)

Many thanks to Brian and Andrea for planning out this weekend! Lots of fun with a great bunch! Looking forward to the next event  :beerchug:

I had a great time as always, and thanks to Andrea and Brian for hosting a really awesome rally.  Unfortunatly I didn't get to meet Kirby, I think I scared him stiff, or he must be petrified around new people.  The frozen lemonade was a special treat.  Hope everyone arrived at home ok and thanks to everyone who took photos and posted them.  I like pictures but I'm too lazy to take them.  Counting the days till my next rally.

Later,
Alex

Wow, That's the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this event. Brian, Andrea & Kirby simply did an outstanding job in the planning and execution of this rally.
The weather was perfect, The hotel was great, The local food was awesome and of course
the great company of so many coggers all in one place never hurts.

A huge Thank you &  :bravo_2: to Brian, Andrea, Kirby and everyone else involved in putting this
event on, it was truly a pleasure to attend.

Here is a link to my pictures so grab a snack & favorite beverage and take a peek

http://rides.webshots.com/slideshow/582834969MiobEv

Hope to see you all at some upcoming events.

Well, I'm not home yet. I'm broadcasting from the luxurious Super 8 in downtown Kingston. I was hoping to make camp at Oneonta, but I simply ran out of light and energy.

Tomorrow morning, when I'm tanked with Shell 87 and a jolt of Joe, I get to wind my way up 28, one of my favourite roads in NY.

HUGE thank you to Andrea and Brian for a superb job of hosting the Spring Fling. A first-class job, folks. I had a blast.

Thanks also to my morning pit crew -- Ben, Brian, Chris and Marc (and SISF via telephone) -- for helping me to leave Rally Central on a fully-functional machine. As of 9 p.m. this evening, I am happy to report that Connie's breathing is back to normal, and she is sipping, not gobbling, her fuel.

Simon

P.S. Bye, Alex:)

Harriet and I had a great time. Great people, hotel and food. Thank you Andrea and Brian and all other helpers that made this possible for a great weekend. Perfect weather, whoever made that request did a good job too.  Pictures to follow, back to work today ugh.

Wow, thanks for all the positive feedback!

After hosting our very first COG event I can absolutely say it was a great experience for us (Andrea and me). As usual, the real attraction of the event isn't the riding, meals or even the local scenery- it is the people participating at the events that make them great, and the Spring Fling was that way too. The group I belong to that has the nicest, best piece of all humanity is COG.

A big thanks to Pat Malloy for taking all those photos. Others took lots of great photos too, such as Steve Smith, but I had asked Pat if he would cover the event and I think he did a great job.

A bit thanks to Steve Smith too as he was extremely helpful all the way through the planning of this event which started way back at the end of last summer. He is a fantastic mentor too- helpful but never trying to take over or actually run the event; he left everything up to me but always gave good advice and thoughts while not ever giving me the idea that he wanted anything to be done any specific way. For those of you who are thinking about organizing something for your local COG group (and it could be anything from a multi- day event to something as simple as a lunch or dinner gathering at a restaurant), I would encourage you to forge ahead and do it as Steve will give you the advice, guidance and confidence to make it relatively easy without pushing you aside.

Finally, my apologies to the woman standing just behind me and to my right at the group photo. Yes, I did see your face as you were looking at what was in my hands. That was Kirby drinking some Del's. Kirby really isn't so scary but he is something of an acquired taste and meeting him for the first time without some preparedness often results in the look you had on your face.

This is the first COG event I have been allowed to attend and it was great! I don't get out much so this was a real treat. I got to meet a bunch of great people and it was phenomenal to see all those bikes with KiPass show up. Of course, there were some down sides to the trip as well- here I am all ready to go to the banquet, wrist band and all, when Brian told me I could not enter the restaurant. He actually said something like "They pay exterminators good money to keep your kind out of the restaurant".

But I did meet some wonderful people; I think this guy was my favorite:

I also heard that one of my Kirby's KiPass Korrection Kits had to be given away three times before anyone actually wanted it; that was a bit disappointing but the product is new and apparently not yet very popular.

Anyway, thanks for having me along- I had a great time although it was a little scary being handled by that intoxicated guy who was stumbling around with me in the parking lot- I do not heal well if I break anything.

Well sorry for the delayed reply but the server was being a bit recalcitrant last night. ???

Got back to the ranch about 2pm Sunday after a fairly uneventful run down 95.  I was even greeted by some nice traffic on the Belt Pkwy to remind me I was back in NYC...OH JOY!  My gearbox trouble seems to have faded away over the weekend leading me to believe perhaps ole Capt Bob is right about the oil switch being the problem, guess we'll see.

Brian and Andrea did one helluva job.  I wish my first rally worked half as well!  Rhode Island is a beautiful state, and who knew Connecticut had those twisties!?!  But I must say the most exciting thing for me was meeting the one and only Kirby.  As you can see above I was beaming with pride and joy at this momentous event.  Kirby even gave me a quick peck on the cheek!!!! I don't think I'll wash that side of my face again!  Although that might not help the rash that's developed... ;)

Great job guys!

I too want to extend a big thank you to Brian and Andrea for putting on a fantastic Rally.    It was one of the most fun events I have ever attended and that is purely because of the people who were attending.

COG boasts some of the nicest people I know,  and it is the people who make each rally better then the last and more enjoyable.  People like Brian/Andrea and Cap'n Bob, Wayne, Terry Mitch etc etc etc etc are the reasons I keep coming back again and again and again and again...

Kudos Brian and Andrea! This was an amazing time :)  (And My coworkers are ready to kill me over the cat joke now LOL)

I have added 2 videos from Ocean Drive in Newport.

Thanks for the assist....it seems my lessons in proper storytelling were cloudy due to lack of hops and barley. :))
