Here we go folks. Plan Now. I won't be OtP for this one. Sincerely hope to be escorting the Euro OtP traveler this time around. Planning on riding out. Who's in? 2 day ride out. Let's mob!

I'm going. I'm riding. I'll probably being going right past you so could join up.

2 days?  You're nuts... :-\

I gotta keep it to 400 miles or so to keep my back from killing me.  Then again, I have lots of vacation time, so I can take it slow.

I was thinking:
- Day 1:  Show Low
- Day 2:  Silver City (down Devil's Highway)
- Day 3:  somewhere in TX
- Day 4:  Kerrville

Its that 3rd day I'm not sure of.  North or south of I-10?

Devils Hwy 666 (191) in AZ is directly between Vegas and Kerrville so we're going there right?  right?

Hell yeah, I picked my route specifically to include it.  Couldn't see passing it by, seeing as how it's 1200+ miles even if you just take I-10.  But then, I'm thinking of at least a 2 week trip.  4 days there, 1 day rest, rally 5 days, rest a day, 4 days back is what, 15 days?  Fearless Leader may have used all his vacation time for a while with the OtP fun... ;D  I actually will have to take 3-1/2 weeks next year or lose it.

Ah, Craig, thanks.  I enjoyed the hospitality of the SC folks last year at the Big Bend rally and I know you all will put on a great rally!!!

Given the lack of good Texas BBQ here in the Vegas area, I'm probably going to just turn this trip/rally into a series of RTE's for BBQ.  RTBBQ!

Here's an alternate, more northerly route:

- Day 3:  Carlsbad, NM (via Hillsboro, Hatch, Las Cruces, Cloudcroft, Pinon, Artesia)
- Day 4:  Kerrville (via Andrews, Big Spring, San Angelo, Fredericksburg)

I was considering staying in Fredericksburg an extra day and riding out of there, then sliding down to Kerrville for the first rally day.  Partly depends on the expense of staying at rally central on days when the group rate does not apply.

Aww, don't worry Craig.
I'm just picking on the Old man on a Connie b'cause it's fun.
He and I are fellow Travelers.

Old Guy,, I hava a thought.
If your escorting the "OtP" Traveler,,, longer ride is better.
Mebbe swing by Colorado..
(In Texas miles) it's really close to Kerrville.

Ride safe, Ted

Ayup. IF the traveler comes into LAX Me thinks 3 days in CA, 2 days in Vegas Baby, 2 days in UT, 2 days in CO, 1 day NM into TX then rt 66 back. Now not in any of these states are these days enough but then. Heck Cman, come April '18 vaca resets. 4 weeks and ain't afraid to use it  :great:

The Southwest's 9 Day Tour of the Southwest, leading to the Three Sisters Rally.

But you gotta make it 10 days and squeeze in at least 1 AZ day somehow, so it's a complete SW Region tour (sorry HI).

Rode that part of 66 last year. Amazing how narrow the road was!

I don't know where I'll be but fast camping from the west coast is a likelihood.

So right now waiting on decisions from the OtP community on arrangements and I know this takes time. Would very much like to show the Euro Traveler some SW hospitality. We got this!

I keep staring at the Butler Maps and end up retracing my route to Big Bend in 2016, or something like it:

Leave 6/3:
Day 1: Pahrump - Flagstaff via Peach Springs
Day 2: Flagstaff - Alpine(AZ)
Day 3: Alpine - Las Cruces via Devil's Highway, Silver City (side trip up Rt.15 and down Rt.35), Hillsboro, and Hatch
Day 4: Las Cruces - Carlsbad(NM) via Alamogordo, Cloudcroft, Rt. 130 to Rt. 24 through Pinon, Dunken, Artesia and maybe down through Queen to the end of the pavement.
Day 5: Carlsbad - Del Rio (TX) via Davis Mountains
Day 6: Wander all over the hill country to Kerrville.
Arrive 6/8.

Still petitioning the OtP committee pretty hard so all route suggestions are welcome. Please send them in!  :beerchug:

So'z ya Know'z IF I am successful petitioning the OtP command and control group to bring the OtP rider into the west coast the Loosey Goosey plans are So Cal to Cent Cal Coast (1 day), over hill and dale to Vegas Baby (2 days), into Utah (2 days) to Colorado (2 days), New Mexico into Texas (2 days) to the National. Return route along the 66 through New Mex, Arizona, California (3 days). Planning about 3 weeks end to end. Depending on travelers time. We need to blow some European brain cells. Who's in?

Seeing this discussion; I have a thought
Their hoping to do more at this years national to include New Members.{First Timers}
I AM NOT sure what that will be....

Looking at the member numbers in the discussion, it appears that some of you {who might be with the Traveler} will be going to your first National?
If so, maybe we can work that into a First Timer Involvement..?
Again, I have no idea what that involves,, but, maybe,, <sneaky grin>  :great:

By the way, I won't be in the group as I'm already in Heaven,, {err Texas}, but maybe I can be there when the group arrives with some cold refreshments for ya'll..    :beerchug:

Here is what I have put together so far IF we get to host the OtP rider. As always local knowledge and suggestions are encouraged. Lot's of opportunities for SW folks to jump in or out for a day or 2 or hang for the duration.

OMC,

What day are you planning to arrive in Kerrville? Saturday or Sunday? Trying to figure out where to catch you as you go through Colorado.  Meet in Cortez, or join up as you near Gunnison?

Old man, San Antonio NM if at meal time  (or not) Buckhorn burgers great green chili cheese burgers let OTP try some Hatch chilies.
Than about 15 miles east on 380 is the Trinity site memorial where the first A-bomb was exploded to the south. Unfortunately you can only go to the real site one or two days each year.

Looking to roll into Kerrville on Sun Rob. GScott Mmmmmmmm hatch chili omelet in Defiance NM.  :great:

Where are y'all staying in Albuquerque? I could hook up there and ride out Sunday, but we are only going as far as Lubbock, TX. The plan is to see in old girlfriend there, NOT MINE, Jami's!

She friendly?  :) If it firms up and need to check but prolly close to or at Cousin Teds NM AAD. I'll keep you posted. You don't want to get hooked up in CO? You heading into the Nat later or turning around?

Old Man on a Connie said:

I don't have enough PTO to do the ride in CO. Found out the girlfriend may be a flake at that time of the year and not be home so we are either riding all the way to the Nat with y'all or coming in the day after.

Suggestions for Day 1 route:

1. If Day 1 is a weekday, plan on getting out of Irvine early. 405 will be a parking lot after about 8 AM and it could easily take 2+ hours to get out of LA. But there is a carpool lane (though often not that much faster than the normal lanes) and opportunity to filter (California explicitly made lane-splitting legal in 2017). Weekend mornings are usually pretty clear (by LA standards, meaning that there's still quite a bit of traffic by normal standards but it's moving at 65+).

2. Might consider taking PCH from Irvine to Seal Beach for a nice little "intro to California", then getting on the freeway. Don't bother with PCH from Long Beach to Santa Monica, it's just lots of stoplights and nothing to see.

3. Rather than taking 405 to 101 and going through the Valley (boring superslab), take the 10 down to Santa Monica and pick up PCH there. Much more scenic ride through Malibu and right along the ocean up to Oxnard. Also probably less traffic.

4. Lunch - Ruddell's Smokehouse in Cayucos. A little hole in the wall a block from the beach, with the most amazing smoked fish tacos ever.

Depending on the date I hope I can make part of the Day 1 ride with you. And if you need any help with arrangements in the LA area let me know.

That looks good, although I stand by my suggestions for the LA section. And Cayucos is just a little bit out of the way and worth it.

Is there a reason you're starting in Irvine? If the traveler(s) fly into LAX you can start from that area and get out of the city traffic sooner. There's not really anything enjoyable or scenic about the 405.

Aye. Picking up the loaner bike from Ma Kaw at the HQ in Lake Forest CA. The traffic will suck. Bless CA filtering laws. One of the few smart decisions CA has made.

Hmm. If you could get them to shuttle the bikes up to Santa Monica for pickup it would make for a much better day 1 ride.

And yeah, every once in a while the CA legislature forgets themselves and passes a sensible law. But not often...

Hey, if you all are coming in on I 10 or down from NM, why not plan riding down TX 118 to Fort Davis, TX 17 to Marfa, US67 to Presidio and then FM 170 (The River Road)
slideshow_land_bigbend.jpg

over to Study Butte. Then you could pick up TX 118 up to Alpine and then US 90 East through Langtry (Judge Roy Bean) and across the Pecos River Bridge

Pecos_Highway_Bridge_09-27-09_Med_Scaled_2.jpg

and then catch the Three Sisters from the "back end"  ;D to Kerrville.

If in Study Butte, eat here!:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g56758-d1984003-Reviews-Rio_Bravo_Restaurant-Terlingua_Texas.html

Carumba!!!!! You could even stop off at Terlingua Ghost Town on FM 170.

This catches the Top Roads in the Big Bend area. You will have to bungie your jaws closed after riding those roads!

There is also El Patio in Presidio which has great "Meskin" Food:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g56498-d590249-Reviews-El_Patio-Presidio_Texas.html

Make sure you stop and hydrate well before the River Road, it is the most technical road in TX (IMHO) and needs your full attention! :motonoises: :-\ :-\ :motonoises: :-\ :72:

Craig

From I 10 to TX 118 - Kent, Texas - South through the Davis Mountains, first section is through Robbers Roost and then into tight twisties, then you pass by McDonald Observatory and down to historic Fort Davis.

TX 17 - This is a shortcut to Marfa to catch US 67

US 67 - Take US 67 south out of Marfa and the Marfa Plateau, then into triple digit sweepers in the Chinati foothills  :motonoises: :motonoises: and the descent into Presidio.

FM 170 East - This is the River Road and the first section going east is scenic but not overly technical, once you pass Santana Canyon you climb up  a scenic 20% grade that starts the "bit of fun" section. The Terlingua Ghost town and Rio Bravo restaurant are to the west of Study Butte and the end of the River Road. Gas at Study Butte at the Alon station.

TX 118 North - this climbs out of Study Butte up into Green Valley and then some fine speed limiter test sections of high visibility straightaways. Climbs through the great sweepers and then through a border check point. After this it is a final section of nice twisties into Alpine.

Alpine might make a great stop for the night. highlandinn.net Affordable COG SLEEP

Next morning US 90 east from Alpine takes you through Marathon, Sanderson, Langtry, and then Del Rio. You can catch US 377 here or continue on US 90 to Uvalde and then north to ravish the Three Sisters.

That's a long day but good route......need to eat miles . . . . . that is the way to go.

The route I suggested would add at least one additional day.

If you are returning the back in SoCAL, catch Big Bend on the way back?

Big Bend is epic, but would not support a NAT due to hotels........ the roads there are TOP SHELF.

So true!

Dang Craig, now you got me thinking.  I'm already retracing most of my route down to Big Bend, and if I use an extra day, instead of going Carlsbad directly to Del Rio, I can stay in Alpine and hit up Big Bend on my way to Del Rio.

Any good places to stay/eat in Del Rio?  Or is there a better stop mid-way between, say, Alpine, and Kerrville.  I'm trying to keep my riding days between 300-400 miles.

Cool. Barring any unforeseen conflicts I should be able to join at least as far as Morro Bay.

I understand now why you're starting in OC, but would renew my suggestion to get on PCH in Santa Monica rather than going up 405/101 through the Valley. And plan to get out of Lake Forest either before 7AM or after about 9AM.

Cool :great: Yeah prolly after 9a after PR stuff and packing. I'll take a look at that Santa Monica route. Isn't that alot of stop and go through Malibu etc? Though may be something fun for the Euros to C.  :beerchug:

There are some traffic lights (not a ton) until you get past Malibu but you're right on the beach so the scenery makes up for it. Weekday morning it may be a quicker route also, traffic will probably be pretty light. Summer weekends is when it tends to be stop-n-go.

Preview. This is southbound from Mugu Rock but you get the picture...

https://youtu.be/DGuwgi9blJs

I can't imagine a better intro to California than putting the guys on this an hour or so into their adventure.

Cool! The LA part is easy, just jump on 10W from the 405 and it will dump you onto PCH (near the western terminus of Rte 66, so closure, right?).

The connection to 101 in Oxnard can be a little confusing - it doesn't seem like you're going the right way, but you are. But not bad if you've got GPS running.

OK my route down is finalized.

Sat 6/2:    Pahrump to Flagstaff
Sun 6/3:  Flagstaff to Alpine, AZ (Sportsmans Lodge)
Mon 6/4:  Alpine, AZ to Silver City, NM down the Devil's Highway
Tue 6/5:    Silver City, NM to Artesia, NM
Wed 6/6:  Artesia, NM to Marathon, TX (Gage Hotel) (https://goo.gl/maps/TqzfJsTaZm52)
Thu 6/6:  Loop through Big Bend and stay at the Gage again (kind of a rest day)
Fri  6/8:  Marathon to Fredericksburg at the Peach Tree Inn (https://goo.gl/maps/sPUHyG3i7Mq)
Sun 6/10: YO Ranch Hotel for the rally.

Pretty sure it's open to Santa Barbara & beyond, and by June we should be out of rain/mudslide season.

There are some long-term closures further north but they're not on your route.

Hunter Ligget point. Thanks Dman, Thats how we get back to the coast. Also edited to go through Naciamiento instead of around. Did not add Hunter Ligget yet. https://goo.gl/maps/iBQRm1TcT692  Keep those suggestions coming.

Fer you that is! Arriving/Departing  LAX Ca. I'll send ya the Itinerary so far Teddums. Not a bad Idea TJ. Wanted to run them through Solvang. I'll take a look.

Wait, we're missing the point --- Route - smoute !!  (OK, nothing rhymns with "route")

The bigger question is: When you get to Capitola at the end of Day 1, what's everyone want to drink??? I'll have wine and beer -- but Old Man, what kind of whiskey??? And do I need to install some schnapps (wait, I think I saw enough of someone -- not me or my fellow OtP rider -- expelling that at breakfast to answer my own question ....  no schnapps for ....)      :rotflmao:

You know me Sir! I shall come self equipped. And much like you and I, The travelers shall enjoy what is offered and like it!  ;) :beerchug:

OK, my route back is more northerly.  I'm staying at the YO Ranch Hotel over the weekend after the rally and leaving the following Monday:

6/18 - Kerrville to Lubbock (somewhere near there)
6/19 - to Eagle Nest, NM (via Clovis, Tucumcari, Las Vegas)
6/20 - to Bluff, UT
6/21 - to Cedar City, UT
6/22 - back to Pahrump

I've got about 4200 miles and that doesn't even count the week of the rally...

For those who plan to join on Day 1 in LA but don't want to suffer on the 405 in both directions, I'd suggest a RDVZ at Patrick's Roadhouse in Santa Monica. It's just after you get onto PCH off of the 10, Chevron station next door and it's on the correct side of the road to head north.

If Mark can shoot out an alert when they're leaving Lake Forest others can time their arrivals accordingly - with traffic Kaw HQ to Patrick's is probably between 1-1.5 hours, with filtering set to "on".

I'm hoping to have a tracking device by that time so folks can follow along. Keep ya posted.  :beerchug:

Dang, you rode across Kansas with the Chica? Getting a new smart watch that is GPS enabled. Can track my heart rate too so you know when we are in UT and CO. and when we get to the lodging for the night and get mellow.  ;) :beerchug:

Mark, I pre-ran the route as far as Buellton today. No brainer, you definitely want to do 154 out of Santa Barbara. It's a little bit twisty and the scenery is eye-popping, a great contrast to the beach scenes up to that point. There's a paved vista point just past the top that would probably make a good rally point & photo op.

For a quick & tasty lunch I'd suggest El Rancho Market, a couple of miles after you get on 246 from 154. Deli counter serves really good tri-tip sandwiches and other BBQ goodies. And you can pick up a bottle or four of the Central Coast's finest for later enjoyment. From there you can roll through Solvang on 246 and pick up 101 at Buellton.

Your the Man. I need to recruit you.  :great: :beerchug:

Mark, have you got a date and lodging location set for the final day of OtP (Kingman(?) to LA)? If possible I'll plan to connect with you guys for that.

And I think I mentioned before, if you need any help with logistics in LA let me know.
