dirty oil

edison1

Training Wheels
new, just picked up my firs bike in over 20 years
got a 2010 C-14
had the 600mile service done and oil was over full
230 miles later I decided to take some out
had to remove about 3/4 of a quart to get it between the lines in the sight glass
and the oil looks really dirty
how should it look after 230 miles

thanks  Ed

You'll normally see some metal flakes in the first couple oil changes. It's also very easy to overfill this bike with oil, and the sight glass can sometimes be deceiving. My method is to put in about 4.5 quarts after an oil and filter change and then ride it about 10 miles and come back and see where it settles on the sight gauge. Usually that puts it just about right. The book says to use 4.7 quarts when doing an oil and filter change, but my experience has been that is just a bit too much. My suspicion is that some of the oil is trapped in the head and VVT actuator and doesn't fully drain out, so I have to add a bit less. Also, be aware that you really need to ride the bike after changing the oil to get it warm and circulated all through the transmission before checking the level. If you just pour in the new oil cold and set the level by the sight glass, it will be usually be wrong after you ride it and check it again.

As for how dirty the oil is, if it bothers you, just change it again. In My Opinion, the single best thing you can do for an engine during break in is frequent oil changes to flush the metal particles out of it.
