F1 Error Code - Error Code 39

ang

Tricycle
Got the f1 error code for the first time yesterday on my 08 with 30,000 miles, as soon as I started the bike up it flashed on and then went away. I rode for about 45 minutes at highway speeds and it flashed about 5 more times with no affect in performance. I am thinking it could be interference with my radar detector as I just received it back from Escort after a warranty repair and had it on the bike for the first time. I will go ahead and check the battery and ground connections.

Is the bike under warranty? If so take it in and have the dealer toss the KDS machine on it to take a look.

I know that the '10's can have this every so often and it's being attributed to a software bug, but i've not heard of it on the 08-09's

The bike is out of warranty. I checked the code and I am getting a error code 39, can't seem to find that number in the manual. I may unplug the pcv and see what happens.

I can not find it in the manual either.  Google brings back this as an error for a zx10 as an ecu communication error.  Concours manual has it as 37 and 38.  Maybe someone who can search the manual better will have an answer.

Me neither. Here's what they list:

Notes:

I just disconnected my PCV and gave it a try but the 39 still comes up. Bike starts though.

The 2010 manual lists error code 39 as a KIPASS ECU communication error. I don't see this listed in the 2008 manual, but it probably is the same. I suspect you have an interference issue of some sort.

Fred, can you expand on the interference issue. What should I be looking for?

My "best guess" is something is interfering with the CAN buss communication. Maybe some signal is too close to the buss wires in the wire harness and causing cross talk. It could be a whole host of things that might be causing it.

First I guess I'd make sure that the FOB is in close proximity to the KIPASS ECU and then I'd start turning off any extraneous electronics you have and see if you can isolate the cause. Try moving the bike to a location away from any buildings or other interference sources. See if you can isolate the cause by a process of elimination.

I'd also make sure you don't have any electronics located close to the KIPASS ECU under the seat.

I will move items around tomorrow, door opener etc. If I cannot get the code to delete, I assume I will be looking at a new (used) ECU.

Don't start replacing parts until you find out more about exactly what is going on. If you do, you'll likely end up wasting your money. Additionally, in order to replace either the engine ECU or the KIPASS ECU, you have to register them with the KDS3 tool that only the dealers have. So it's not a simple matter of just plugging in a new box.

Would it be possible to get this posted as a "sticky" somewhere?  (It may already be, I havent looked)  Maybe under a different header so it could be found with a quick search.  Not that we use them everyday, but it could be good info to have.

Thanks for the info!

Here is what I would try

1) Do a visual inspection for frayed wiring etc
2) Disconnect the battery for about 10 min, hook it up and see if that clears (I've seen Computer gremlins go away with that before on cars etc)
3) Check the routing of wires to see if you have anyting running near a harness that goes to the ECU or see if you have any electronics near the ECU's
4) Check/Clean your ground points! (The battery as well as the ground spider thingy under the tank)  modern electronics are VERY sensitive to bad grounds....

I don't thinking making sure the FOB is closer etc would make a difference,  I'm not 100% sure, but I think Kipass only queries the Fob when you activate the system (Push the stove knob) and once it authenticates the FOB it shuts down,  it MAY requery at intervals but I don't think it does...  If it was a FOB out of range I don't think it would throw an engine code it would flash "No Fob" IIRC

but the above steps cost nothing to try

This is all very good advice, especially checking over the grounds.

Just did a quick test before heading to work, the bike starts but the hands on the gauges do not sweep or indicate revs. Did the battery disconnect and checked the ground, all fine.

Do you have any other meter panel malfunctions, like the gas gauge or coolant temp or tire pressure sensors etc?

Is the bike still under warranty? Even if it isn't this might be a case where you need to take it in to a dealership so they can hook it up to the KDS3 and run some diagnostics on it.

That sounds like some sort of frayed/loose wiring, perhaps a ground along the way.

Sadly you need to start tracing wiring and check any connectors on the harnesses for corrosion on the pins etc.

I'd start behind the guage cluster and see if there is something loose back there....
