Harley-Davidson Recalls Motorcycles for Brake Concerns
Action underscores the importance of properly maintaining brake systems

Harley-Davidson is recalling several model years of its motorcycles over potential braking problems.

The company said the affected bikes are the 2008-2011 Touring, CVO Touring, and VRSC models equipped with antilock brake systems (ABS). The concern is that if owners did not properly maintain these systems, a braking issue may develop.

The rate of fatal crashes is 31 percent lower in a motorcycle with antilock brakes than in the same models without ABS, according to research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. With ABS, riders can stop without fear of wheels locking up, which can result in a dangerous skid, and stopping distances also improve on wet and dry surfaces.

But if the systems are not maintained, they may not work properly when needed. Harley-Davidson is concerned that owners may not understand the importance of flushing the DOT 4 brake fluid at least every two years to prevent deposits from forming on brake components.

The recall amounts to a free brake-fluid flush and replacement. More than that, it is an important reminder to all riders (many of whom perform their own maintenance) to confer with the owner’s manual, particularly regarding systems that may be new to them, such as ABS.

I started riding in the late 70's, when most bikes still had points, and certainly had carburetors. Back then you HAD to learn to maintain your bike, or you probably weren't going to be riding anywhere - y'all my age or older know what I mean. today, I talk to folks who have NO CLUE about how their bike works. they're coming from automobiles with fuel injection and sealed transmissions... so the maintenance is nothing like it used to be. They carry that experience over to their bike. Heck, I've even spoke with folks who have never adjusted their throttle cables and are reluctant to do so. Very detached from the mechanics of the machine.

  The biggest problem as I see it is that cars don't fall down... motorcycles do. I don't like falling down on a motorcycle. If doing maintenance will help  keep my skin on my bones and not on the pavement, I'm all for it. ABS is a GREAT addition to motorcycling, but it's mechanical, and must be maintained.

  Personally, I think Harley is being Generous to do free fluid changes for something that is CLEARLY a maintenance issue. Of course, it does get the owners back in the showroom to look at those shiny new models  :motonoises:  Steve
 
If I understand correctly Honda still has the problem. They won't tell me what it
actually is, but the issue still stands. I agree with you about ABS systems. I will
do brake flush on bikes without ABS, not on ABS bikes due to the fact that they
all seem to be a bit different.
