Has anyone cut down the size of the muffler?

The German instructions show cutting the front of the muffler open. I've done this mod and that is not necessary. You only need to grind down the seam at the rear of the muffler so that you can slide out the internals. Then trim the rear of the outer sleeve, making sure to follow the contour and cut a similar amount off of the internals. Slide it all back together and weld the seam.

There were detailed instructions with pics on the old forum, alas.
