the Burros,Tall tales & Lonesome road OATMAN Ride is now official

Bullheadbert

Street Cruiser
Boys with toys, Maven's of the motorcycle  :motonoises:, it's time to shake the winter blues and ride the Mother Road west from Kingman AZ's best know hash house Americana, Mr. Dz Route 66 Dinner.  The route takes you up over the Black Mountains to Oatman, where the Mare of Oatman begs for carrots and votes from strangers while dropping political favors on the street.  Then it's on to the hedonistic pleasures of Pirate Cove on the Colorado River for grunt and grog, as well as, an opportunity to check out the swag and the booty in this pirates den of inequity.  If time permits it's on to Needles, CA and Goffs.

For thoses wishing to spend the night, Kingmans AZ is the starting point or you can stay at the local "glitter gulch", Laughlin NV., reasonable room rates, eats and entertainment.

It's the BTL-OATMAN RIDE, bring your camera and imagination.  April 6th, 2013

Details of the ride are available in the Calendar of Events for the South West Region, just click on the event.

COME ONE, COME ALL

Bert

It's on my calendar.  We'll have to see how things roll out... My sig-other is on call that weekend (as it stands now) and he usually can't travel far when that happens.  I may have to come up w/o him.  >:D

I do have a question though...  The end time listed on the calendar post is Noon... is the ride (if kickstands are up at 10) only 2 hours?  Or did I mis-read something?

Sounds like you have the same types of issues we have.  When my better half is "on call" at the hospital she's on a 30 minute electronic leash.  Perhaps your sig-other can trade "call" with someone else.

"Noon was just a plug in number".  I'm doing a pre-ride today for mileage and time.  With stops I anticipate it will be a pleasant all day ride - not hurries, no worries :motonoises:.

I did a pre-ride today.  As an example, if you where to stay in Laughlin then ride to Mr. Dz, the start point, do the ride and return to Laughlin, portal to portal distance is approximatey 190 miles.  I did the ride in 5hrs 15 min with a one hour lunch stop at Pirate Cove.  I was nice and didn't flog the throttle very much - sightseeing speed.  Realistically, a reasonable "total time out" would be 6 to 7 hours as we'll what to stop at the points of interest and maybe spend a little extra time in Oatman and the Goffs Museum.

Hope this helps,
Bert

Bert - do you have a recommendation for lodging in either Laughlin or Kingman?

I can probably recommend some spots in Henderson if you want Jim. We can ride down to Kingman in the morn. About an hour of "over the dam and through the Dez to Bert's hash house we go."

JPavlis_CA said:

JP glad you brought it up.  Since you're coming in from SJ,CA I assume you're staying Fri & Sat nights.  If so Laughlin's your best choice.  Personally I would stay at the Golden Nugget or the Aquaris given that you're on an MC.  Both resorts have park'g structures which means lots of cameras & security for your ride.  We get European MC'ers coming through here on a Mother Road package tour from Vegas & that's where they stay.  It would also place you closer to home on the return run.

If you're staying in Kingman, Hampton Inn & Best Western are your upper end while Super 8 & Motel 6 are in the middle ($40 range).  Personally I would stay away from the nonchain motels.

If you stay in Laughlin it's a 33 mile ride up to Kingman along 68 to Mr.Dz.  We live on the other side of the River, we could hook up for the ride up if you like.

Yeah... Unfortunately, he can rarely trade and it seems to be forever changing, so while in theory we know in advance, in actuality, it is just about week by week.  Can be very frustrating.

Thanks for the update on the mileage and times... I still am hoping to go and will be looking into the hotels you mentioned in a later post if I can't find crash space w/ some quasi-friends I have in the area.  ;)

Reta's has the same problem when nurses leave or transition to another unit or it's vacation time.

Hope you can make.

I'm mailing you a Ride Card just in case.  I'll explain what a Ride Card is in a future post.  This way if you can make the ride you'll have one as I only have a limited number.  You should get it in a couple of days.

It's pretty straight forward as it serves as a riding aid and a ride memento. It will make sense when you get it.

Hope to see you there,

Bert

Bert, Can I get a "Ride Card" too? My wife and I will try to be there on the 5th and stay likely in Laughlin for a couple of nights. The lure of the "Card" has us interested, along with the fine group that will be there! TY!    :great:  :motonoises:

About the BTL-OATMAN RIDE  route cards

I've ordered and received a limited number of cards for the April 6th ride from Kingman, AZ to Goffs, CA.  These cards will be available to registered COG members and guests for pick up at Mr. Dz Dinner, our starting point, the morning of the ride.  If you and your guest are registered for the event and wish to reserve a card please send me a Private Mail in that regard.  Be advised that a limited number of Ride Cards have been ordered.  It's first come, first served after the reserved cards.

What is a Ride/Route Card?  For those who have ridden enduros the card will have a vague similarity to a roll chart.  Except it's like a post card.  The front face is indeed a postcard with a photo of a seminal element of the Mother Road not covered in the narrative description of the event.  It's a great photo op point for the participants. The back of the card shows total accumulated mileage to each destination, it's purpose and routing to the next point.

What's the purpose of the Card?  It provides the participants with basic information of where we are going.  Should participants wish to stop along the way to take photos or smell the roses they can then find their way to the next stop.  Post ride it's memorabilia or bragging rights on Monday morning when the talk turns to "what did you do over the weekend".  You will surely win out over those that went shopping with their respective spouse or watched World Fighting Federation reruns both Saturday and Sunday.  However,,,,, if someone says they flew their Gulfstream G500 to Peru in order to climb the pyramids at Machu Picchu simply put your Ride Card back into your pocket.  When it's your turn smile and say, "I spent the weekend under the sheets reading old editions of Concourier all the way back to 1993, cover to cover.

Hope this helps,

Bert

Okay, so I've managed to clear my schedule.  Weather pending, I'll be there.  I'll go ahead and register.

Still planning route, trying to stay off the slab.
How's 169 and Northshore Road off I-15 through Logandale and around Lake Mead?

Not sure where I'll pull in for the night, depends on how I'm feeling.  Thinking it's gonna be Mesquite, especially if I take the more scenic route down.

So, the day ride looks like this then?

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Cool, glad you can make it.  I like the map.  Why didn't I think of that??  Let me know when you're registered and I'll send you a little something.

169 sure beats the super slab.  Logandale to Overton and around the north side of the lake, it's a nice ride as I recall.  We did a group ride to Zion from Bullhead 4 years ago and came back that way.

Bert

The run down from logandale is nice Mike. Drawback is it's a 50mph road and it begs to be riddin at 70. And the rangers patrol w/ detectors front and rear. They can see you coming and going so be careful. Did you look at the route you took to meet us in Durango and turning so down to Flaggstaff? Dunno if it's shorter or not but you can jump the 66 from flagstaff down to Kingman and it's a nice ride too.

Shortest route down I-15
515 miles at 7.5hrs

Shortest route through Utah to Flagstaff
652 at 10.5hrs  :-[

Thanks for the tip on Logandale.

Dang. Also they finally got the fee station set up in Overton for the lake but if you have a park pass your good.

Okay, I'm all registered.  Looks like it will just be me.  Sig. other can't swap call that weekend.  :(
Anyway, trying to figure out what time I need to leave on Friday to get up there before it gets stupid late... Still need to figure out accommodations too... Maybe I can get crash space via some SCA friends in the area.  >:D

Only seems to be a few of us are registered already...  Anyone else coming up from Phx/Tucson/Prescott?  Maybe we could meet up along the way?  I was figuring on taking the 93 up from Wickenberg.

In any case, looking forward to it.  :motonoises:

For some inexplicable reason I signed up for this.  ;D

Old Man which way are you going down from Henderson?

Excellent CMan. Only 1 way down. Across the damn Dam (well, the bridge now) and down. Come back up through Searchlight. Lemme know your plans and we can motor down.

Old Man,

I'm broke/cheap/dieting so I will eat before I head out (although I will have coffee at the diner ;D).  Left to my own devices, I would leave at 7, putting me there around 9:30.  Us desert rats don't like the cold over the pass early in the morning.  ;D

That's probably later than you were planning on arriving.  What time were you going to leave Henderson?

Darn it.  I am going to miss this get together.  I am headed back up to Spokane, WA mid week and will probably be behind a snowblower while tall tales are being told.  Look fwd to the photos and the write up.

Do great things and be safe all!

Sorry you're going to miss it.  I'll take lots of photos and see if I can get it into the Concourier.

Be safe going back to Spokane.  Hope to see you at the Idaho Falls Rally

I am really tempted!!  Only about 9 hours each way to get there.  And that new tire WILL need breaking in!  We'll see...    :)

C U there  :great:

Again, pending weather, I'll be there. Might be meeting up with a rider who could win "Most Miles Traveled".
Forecast all this week is Sunny to Partly Cloudy and in the mid-60's.  However, 7-10 day shows a declining pattern.  :-[

Reservations made for Friday night in Boulder City.

It's good to see some events planned in the Southwest area. I just signed up for the ride, coming from Flagstaff. I'll probably leave on Friday as getting out of Flagstaff early enough is still pretty cold. Looking forward to the ride and meeting everyone. Mark  :motonoises:

Thanks for the heads up from the sunny eastern shore.

???

Anyone else heading that way from the more southerly areas of AZ (Prescott/Payson/Phx/Tucson/etc.)?  I'm heading out early-mid afternoon and would love to ride up w/ company.

Was planning on the 93 to the 40...  :motonoises: :)  :motonoises:

That was a really good ride  :great:  Between 330 and 400 miles, ass fatigue was definitely setting in.  :rotflmao:

It was great to meet everyone.  BertL, post up one of the group pics at Pirate's Cove with everyone's names so I don't feel as embarassed about not remembering everyone.  :-[ ;D

BertL thanks for organizing this ride.

Now for a  :party0036: and a cigar.  ;D

Here are the bikes at the start...

Really looking forward to RRR now!    ;) >:D

:-\ Thanks for the kudos. Reta and I enjoyed putting the ride together, meeting, riding, eating and schmoozing. We made a lot of NBF's (new best friends) along the way so to speak.  Sorry Mark (The Old Man) you've been relegated to an ONBF (old new best friend) status.  :rotflmao:

Here's the unofficial/official ride photo taken at Pirate Cove Resort.

Resident hedonists included, left to right are: Mark B. (Flagstaff), Randy B. - the left banner bearer - (Nor Cal.), Brian B. - aka Caffiene Man - (Pahrump NV), Christy L. (Henderson, NV), Reta L. (Bullhead, AZ), Jeremy B. (Kingman, AZ), Mark H. (Henderson, NV), Mike B. -the right banner bearer - (Utah) and decked out in red, riding a red Connie, Diane R. aka Lady Di.  Not included in the photo are David C. (Mesa) who had to leave early and Bert L. who's hanging out somewhere behind the lens.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the escort BTW!  I made it all the way to Cedar City on Saturday for a total of 424 that day (much of that slow, twisty and laden with burros... as you are fully aware).  ;D
