Zumo XT vs XT2 question

Anybody got a Zumo XT2? I've read that the XT2 uses 12 vdc direct where as the XT uses an inline power cord step down transformer.
The questions are:
1) is that true?
2) If so, do you have to ensure that the zumo is fully charged from a 12v source before you hook it up to your basecamp computer (since the usb 5vdc wouldn't be enough to keep it charged) ?

Those are my only questions but I gladly solicit any other input especially from those people that may have used both units.

I do not own one. But Just as would research any new technology at work, I begin with the specification and manual.

According to the manual the unit can be powered via the USB connector. My educated guess is that the +12VDC to +5VDC power regulator is inside the GPS, instead of being part of the power cord. I assume this change was made to simplify the power cord.

One of the things I recall reading about the XT2 when it first came out is that it is not compatible with Basecamp. I can not confirm or deny this other than the manual does seem to instruct how to add Basecamp data to Garmin Explore. I used Explore a while back and it did not have the feature of Basecamp. I need to read about this more, but no time for it tonight.

Thanks Steve, I'll have to look into Garmin Explore myself.

I have owned the XT and now have the XT2. I found it difficult to plan routes on the actual unit with the XT. Garmin has enhanced the XT2 route planning feature to where it is much easier to drag and drop a waypoint. It has more logic to figure out exactly where you are trying to drop the point. If your route is not super complicated, it is easy to just create the route on the unit. The XT2 also uses the Garmin Tread app, which has replaced Basecamp for this unit and creating routes.

I am using Explore more and more. It works well for finding way points and keeping those in a manageable fashion as you can store items in collections. I have not found it useful for routes and a little better for tracks. Could be me. I have the original XT.

This post reminded me that I wanted to upgrade to the XT2 (new) from the XT (old). Received yesterday.
Question 1 is true. measured with meter at the docking mount
Question 2. USB on my laptop DOES charge the new unit, I thought it would since the new unit will run on the old mount.
The caveat being that the cable supplied will not charge from the USB but will transfer files. 2 other cables will not charge while using the map feature. One higher quality and newer USB-C to USB-C cable does it all.
The fact that the new unit uses USB-C is an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
The internal routing feature is much improved over the old one. For someone that doesn't do basecamp like me, it's all I need. The old one was limited to 30 waypoints, the new one seems unlimited after the first hour of trying. and it's much easier to edit and delete inadvertent waypoints. And not as clunky.

Thank You Laker', Steve, the other Steve, and Jeff for all of the good information.

Since it has taken me years and several online COG sessions to learn the basics of BaseCamp, I have decided to stay with my XT unit and not upgrade to the XT2. Perhaps one day I may learn how to use Explore but it isn't anywhere near the top of my list of things I'm going to do "someday."

Nice write up. I avoided learning Basecamp as I rarely plan pasta map Finging someplace I want to go on the fly and altering a genera route with waypoints has always been a bit of a time consuming pain on the road. Sounds like that may be better and a bit more accurate with the features in the software.

I wondered why your XT was up for sale. I had installed an Android Auto unit alongside to cover some of the holes my XT had so perhaps that will come off the bike. Downpoints are that it will not fit the old mount as I had bought the Touratech for security. Will have to look at size. If the Touratech will not work I may have to find other option or stay with the XT.

Been on the fence with this ne but thanks to all as this has been very helpful
