N.E. Spring Fling, 2013

I'll do my best to be there, unlike this year's. Hopefully I'll get the job at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg WV and will be making a little more money by then. Heh.

Returning from DD, took RT-26 from the Maryland line north to INT-70, just east of Bedford. What a fantastic bit of pavement.  :great:

Mitch, that is a great piece of road!

Southern Bedford County has hundreds of miles of great roads and my buddy Tim Arnold (who was at dog days riding the triumph tiger) is a native of the area and knows all the roads!
He'll be helping me put route sheets together.
We'll get to use all three sides of the tires  ;D

I'm not making my Spring Fling reservations (motel, COG) until towards the end of 2012. LOL I can't even predict what will be happening in November much less then.

Mr. Elkhoof plans to be there- he especially wants to meet Terry after hearing Kirby talk about him endlessly....

Unless something really bizarre pops up, I look forward to making this one. I always enjoy visiting my home state. 57 miles from Bedford to my birthplace in Latrobe.... where I still have relatives. Will probably scoot over there to reconnect with some of them.

You can take the Lincoln Highway the whole way!

Lots of neat stuff to see along the way, including the Flight 93 Memorial.

Most likely Friday or Saturday Mid morning..........

On the subject of Cumberland MD being an hour south, lets all plan to go to the Crabby Pig on Canal Street in Cumberland MD for lunch one day. I'll try to remember to call them and make sure they are open during the week.

Looking forward to this already. Will book my room when its posted the deal has been confirmed.  :great:

May be going...if it's not the same weekend as the Western Pensylvania Cigar Crawl...could try to do both.  >:D

I am planning on being there. After the ride in NY and PA this past weekend, I have to make a full event! :beerchug:

Everyone gets a $5 early registration discount prior to 4/1/12.

I made my reservation at Clara's so planning to arrive noon-ish on the 16th.

All pending future surgery dates not interferring.

Due to so much VA cutting on the horizon, I will probably only do the Spring Fling, the big summer one, and the fall one if its not too late in the year. If I'm lucky on timing of things.

Sunlight at the end of the tunnel showing, though. In 2014 there is a very real possibility I will retire from State service, roll my old 401k funds into the State retirement plan, and let them administer it for me. What I want to do is use those funds to live on for 4 years until I max out social security, after that I'm good to go with SSI and my VA disability benefit. Even possible I'll be able to make SSA give me a disability too.  So maybe not in 2014, but soon after it, I'll have a ton of time on my hands, and a decent income for an old retired guy, and then I want to start showing up for COG events way far out of my own Area and so forth.  :motonoises: :great: :beerchug: :)

Anybody want a roommate? I can't book vacation days until January 1st, so will plan on booking this the first day back to work.

Looking at those videos of the Grand View Ship hotel remind of the first motorcycle tour I ever did.  It was in 1982 when I rode down to Florida for Thanksgiving.  It was a spur of the moment decision and I had no motorcycle luggage at all.  I had a small duffel tied across the seat and a day pack tied on the rear rack.  I ordered a tank bag to be shipped to me in Florida for use on the trip home.  I did the trip down all on I-95 which had finally been completed and the only old kitschy thing I saw was South of the Border where I-95 & US-301 coincide.
sob_pedro.jpg

But on the return trip home I went inland starting at Jacksonville on US-1, 23 & 301.  At that time there was loads of 1950s kitschy roadside attractions and motels along that route from when it had been the main route to Florida.  I wish I had taken the time to shoot some photographs to record the passing of these sites that I'm sure are all gone by now.  So many of the interesting sites and man made landmarks that provided local color and made traveling to different states a unique experience have disappeared.  Everything along most roads has been homogenized with national chain restaurants and motels.  You have to get well off the beaten path to find any local color anymore.

One of the great things about the rally locations Jason picks is that ability to find local color and interesting parts of the traveling past.  But the passing of the S.S. Grand View Hotel is another example of local color being lost.

Jason introduced the S.S. Grand View hotel as part of the Spring Fling topic and my post relates to other examples of lost color and why it would be a lost opportunity to see some if you miss out on attending a rally at one of the locations that Jason picks.  So my post was not really off topic.  To say otherwise means you would have to say Jason's post on the S.S. Grand View Hotel was also off topic.

Btw, if the South of the Border photo was so offensive why didn't either of you bother to edit it out when quoting me?  ???

You just don't get it Mike. There is a big difference between Jason promoting locations and things to do in the actual rally area (that Jason is hosting), and your posting irrelevant BS about something you did years ago, five states and probably 500 miles away from the rally location. (that has nothing to do with the NE Spring Fling)
Your personal agenda took the thread way off topic again like other threads. You also chose to post one of your giant pictures/links/icons that you always feel a need to clutter almost every post of yours with. But either way, your post has nothing to do with the Spring Fling in Bedford, PA. I see it as nothing more than another Mike "look at me" post.
Yes I could have modified your post when I quoted you. But I decided not to for a couple of reasons. For one, I wanted to show the post in whole as you posted it (as an example that cannot be changed easily). Second, had I done that, I didn't want the possibilities of having to hear accusations of censorship or other BS I get to hear often enough. And third, I had a feeling that you would not figure out that your off topic and post yet another off topic post to justify your first post.
Like I said, you just don't get it. So you could now let this go, or more than likely post another off topic rebuttal to keep this going. So we'll have to also clean up this thread like the 4th of July thread you polluted with the woe is me posts you constantly choose to post in public.

Again my apologies for subjecting y'all to this. I probably should have just nuked a bunch of the posts instead of responding to posts in public.

I wish people would not interject unrelated large graphics into discussion threads in general.

And I am off topic now, except what I'm really saying is I'd like to get at information about this event easily without wading through pages of irrelevant graphics. I will not post again about this, sorry.  :truce: :-[

I'm with 3 nights too I guess. Leaving the morning of the 16th, so 16, 17, 18, leave 19th.

I asked them for 2 things, an ADA room and it HAS to be in the block with the rest of COG, and they told me no problem room reserved in same block of rooms COG has reserved.

Maybe I finally did it right, I'm tired of forgetting and getting my ADA room on the other side of the complex.  :rotflmao:

OMG! I remember making that video. I'm the very first bike you see.
That was my very first group riding experience.
I volunteered to ride for someone wanted to shoot some video.
The videographer ( Swriverstone AKA Scott ) and I remain good friends

That video is a good teaser and only scratches the surface of
the roads in Bedford county. There's lots more where they came from.

I'm just north of Altoona. About 40 miles north of Bedford.

There are lots of great roads south of Bedford but two that
really stand out are 26 and 326.
I prefer to run 26 south out of Everett to Rte 40 in Maryland,
then west to Flintstone to pick up 326 north to Bedford.

Seriously, there aren't any bad roads in the area and the
next right or left may lead to the best stretch of the day.

Not something I'm good at. In fact I suck at Mapsource!

We spent 3 hours on the phone the other night, with him logged into my machine helping me drive the program. WOW, it's complicated!

We'll I graduated from Sucking to poor but with Steve's help we've got a couple loops put together and we'll lay a couple more out before May.
Working on these routes reminds me how lucking I am to live where I do as the riding is great in just about any direction. You guys will love the routes we're working on.

Not to be a stick in the mud. But 500 miles can be tough in one day on some of us. 509 miles coming back from Marlinton last August made me pay in a lot of pain for days on end. 500 miles is probably now at least a two day ride each way for me. Yes it's hell getting old and beat up.  :))

It's 600+ slabbing it, a long way for me. But I'm thinking of two lanes to make it more like 800 each. Thinking...thinking...

You aren't being a stick in the mud. Many of us can no longer easily do big mileage in one day.

When I rode my almost new H1 out to California (from West Point) and back, I went out in 3 days (!) and came back in 4. When I team-drove from NY to Seaside CA to report in at Fort Ord to the 7th Infantry Division, we drove non-stop in my hemi cuda pulling a bike trailer, and it still took us a little over 60  hours to get there. It was a great trailer, at 100+ mph it was rock steady.

Heck, when I had my ZX11 in France in 1991 (or was it '92... the fog of war is dense) there were two days I did darn near 1,000 miles in a day. Riding from before sunrise (and pushing it out of the campground to be nice to sleeping vacationers) until late at night. One time I got to the campground office after they closed. Had good luck, the girl that was the daughter of the owners saw me and my bike out front and came and took me to a camping space. Told me, in French, which I could speak and comprehend back then, to come over in the morning and pay 1/2 fee. LOL.

Now, when a day's mileage gets to 300, I am starting to hurt and by 400 it gets debilitating. Sigh.........

@JR...Just need to carry large quantities of "Ranger Candy" on long rides + beer and cigars for the downtime.
